Göran Marby has resigned from his position as President and CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), effective immediately.

This news comes after the .org debacle in 2019-2020 occurred during his tenure at ICANN. Despite some of his achievements, such as leading ICANN through the final phase of the IANA stewardship transition from the US government and creating the DNS Security Facilitation Initiative Technical Study Group, Marby was not viewed as a good president and CEO by many.

ICANN's Board of Directors has expressed gratitude for his work and confirmed that Marby will be available to offer support until May 23, 2024, while Sally Costerton, ICANN's Senior Advisor and Senior Vice President for Global Stakeholder Engagement, will serve as the Interim President and CEO.

The board plans to start searching for a new CEO at the beginning of 2023. It is speculated that Marby will move to one of the significant domain registries as he previously led ICANN and Verisign through an agreement to increase .com prices.

During his tenure at ICANN, which lasted over six years, Göran Marby had both supporters and opponents. However, it is undeniable that he made a significant contribution to the development of the Internet. Among his accomplishments, Marby promoted the expansion of the Internet worldwide, reinforced ICANN's autonomy from governments, and worked to develop cybersecurity technologies.

Marby also managed to lead ICANN successfully during the pandemic, a time when decision-making was required in the absence of explicit guidelines.
