Hello, it would be interesting to hear your opinion on the prospects of domaining as a business.
How long do you think we will be able to trade domain names?

First of all, I mean the liquidity of domains in the future. Those. How many more years will they just do? What if they come up with something else?
That is, does it make sense for you to continue investing in domain names with the idea of reselling them at a profit?
And how long do you think this business will exist?

What today has a bad effect on the domain business (in its old sense):
- applications (apps)
-search engines
-new zones

Those. domains (primarily gTLDs and ccTLDs) have had alternatives, which is bad for traditional zones.
And the question is whether there will be some kind of alternative that can replace them just do.

In my opinion, in spite of all the trends and numerous opinions that newTLDs should not be taken, it is necessary to pay attention to new zones. But not IDN, in any of its manifestations - no IDN in newTLD - at your own peril and economic risk.

Why are the new zones good? The fact that the cost of registering some of them is close to .com, and the employment of beautiful domain names is much lower. Some of them are even cheaper now, for example, .club for $3-5 for the first year and $12-14 for the rest. All this will attract new startups. Moreover, they just like the exotic zone. (Remember how many new web 2.0 projects are in zones like .co, .cc...)

Of course, no one shields startups from .com, and you can even rightly say that projects are more popular in .com. All right, but nonetheless, newTLD growth is to be expected. It will hardly be fast and impetuous, but rather slow and very selective.

So, I recommend that the domainer of the future take a broader look at the domain industry. Now more and more often I notice that they are talking about the .biz, .org zones - that they do not represent anything of value. There were much fewer such phrases even in those days when no one could even think about newTLDs, and when there were no .asia, .mobi, .tel, etc., then in general .biz and .org were held in high esteem as part of the price .com, shall we say.

So, I propose to consider all newTLDs as one new zone, only a very large one. When they introduced .mobi, .tel, people rushed to register everything, and then they realized that they were mistaken. In the case of newTLDs, my advice is not to register everything at all, but on the contrary, be very selective and divide your domain name business into two parts in proportions that you like:
a) classic .com, .net, .de, etc., they have always been valuable and will always be valuable and grow;
b) newTLD as an alternative to part "a" (see above).

For instance, if you find a good domain in your opinion: redsquare.com, think maybe square.red is better? Who can be a buyer, whether their circle has become wider because of this.
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. And it's always worth having a backup option with newTLD, if you yourself understand that the domain is weak, then imagine the most objectively - what kind of project would you yourself do tomorrow on that domain name and how many visitors could you have, if the project is very weak, then the domain is not for anyone not needed. newTLDs can be interesting in that one-word keys are free there, why take a long .com just for the project, if there is a short key. Naturally, it is too bold to believe that they will buy a short key from you for $100,500 specifically for the project, because someone feels sorry for, for instance, a more or less decent .com to buy for an auction for $22 on this topic.

P.S. My post does not at all encourage everybody to run to register newTLDs, just consider what these zones are, you should avoid complex, long, expensive ones, and remember the main thing - the domain should be clear, simple, without hyphens and controversial letters, easy to read and easy to remember. Based on these pillars, successful registrations can be achieved.

We need to look for new perspectives.
I even wrote somewhere that new zones are a great idea for all social projects, if only they would enter into a partnership with a registrar or become registrars themselves, and then offer social network users to attach their own domain name, address to their page on their social networks.  (Like .tel, only more universal.) Everything is in the black: the registrar received a money, social services. network - percentage, user - address, zones - grow, domain industry - grows.
