Title: Webhosting service choice
Post by: SanviMalhotra on Jul 23, 2022, 04:42 AM
To begin with, I am interested in knowing the downsides of using free hosting services. I recall reading that some hosting providers may seize control of a thriving project's domain, essentially taking it away. Are there other potential challenges to consider? This is my primary inquiry.

As for my second question, I would like to develop a straightforward website that doesn't require forums, CGI, PHP engines, or other complex elements. Basic HTTP would suffice, with 50 visitors per day and 50MB of disk space. Essentially, I'm aiming for the bare minimum. My top priorities are ensuring everything is in Korean, avoiding technical issues, having reliable technical support, and safeguarding against deceitful practices such as removing a domain name without cause.

It is not advisable to consider free hosting services that require you to embed advertising. While you may not be sharing your personal data, these providers may run ads on your site (sometimes with viruses) and interfere with the overall appearance.

However, some argue that free hosting services are useful for preserving information since sites remain accessible, even when the author has abandoned them.

In my experience, a few years ago, the primary issues with hosting companies were related to free domains and unreliable control panels. But now, considering the absurdly low prices offered by hosting providers, it seems pointless to opt for free hosting services.

I don't see the point in free hosting providers either. One fake banner per page is enough to screw up your whole site. Perhaps they will be useful to some beginners for "training" in web design and HTML. As for the fact that successful projects are "taken away", these are most likely "urban legends". Deceived users can create very good anti-advertising for such a provider, and this is where its story ends.

One can consider using Heroku as it supports Python, although a downside of this free hosting is that it only offers a small volume of PostgreSQL databases. Deployment can be achieved either through GitHub or their own Git module. Additionally, if there is no activity on the deployed application for 20 minutes, it will "fall asleep" but not turn off.

Another option is PythonAnywhere, which supports both MySQL and PostgreSQL and has a simpler deployment process. However, there is a limitation on the number of processor seconds allowed.

Regarding the downsides of free hosting services, one significant concern is the lack of reliability and security. Free hosting providers often have limited resources to invest in infrastructure and security measures, which can lead to slower website performance, increased downtime, and greater vulnerability to cyber threats. Additionally, as you mentioned, some free hosts may engage in unethical practices such as seizing control of domain names, which can be detrimental to the credibility and continuity of your website.

In terms of technical support, free hosting services generally offer less comprehensive and reliable assistance compared to paid hosting providers. This can be problematic especially if you encounter issues with language-specific content or encounter technical problems that require immediate attention.

When it comes to creating a basic Korean website with minimal complexity, your goal aligns well with the concept of a static website. This type of site, that primarily uses HTML, CSS, and possibly some JavaScript for interactivity, doesn't require server-side scripting languages like PHP or databases. It can be easily hosted on any platform that supports basic HTTP, which should meet your criteria for simplicity and efficiency.

To ensure that everything is in Korean, you'll need to focus on creating or translating content in Korean and using appropriate character encoding for the language. As for safeguarding against deceitful practices, it's essential to carefully review the terms of service and user agreements of any hosting provider, whether free or paid, to ensure that your domain rights are protected.
while free hosting services can offer initial cost savings, they often come with trade-offs in terms of reliability, security, and support. For a basic Korean website with minimal technical requirements, a focus on static content and careful consideration of hosting providers' terms can help you achieve your goals while mitigating potential risks associated with free hosting.
