Which provider to go with when registering an SSL certificate can be a tough decision. I am stuck between choosing the free option, https://letsencrypt.org/, and the cheapest option, https://www.digicert.com/. However, the free option can be confusing as there may not be as much trust associated with it.

Being free is nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to Let's Encrypt. It's important to check out who the organizers and sponsors of the project are, which can be easily found on the main page through a table of logos. However, it's geared more towards individuals who don't typically purchase SSL certificates for their smaller projects and aims to encrypt connections that currently lack encryption. It's worth noting that Let's Encrypt does not yet issue wildcard certificates, and their certificates need to be updated every 3 months (which can be done automatically).

When it comes to choosing a place to get certificates, Digicert may not be the best choice. Other CAs or resellers like GoGetSSL offer very inexpensive paid certificates. Additionally, some registrars like name.com or namecheap.com offer free or inexpensive certificates when buying a domain.

Update: Let's Encrypt now issues Wildcard certificates, making things easier with acme.sh supporting DNS work for a variety of providers.

Currently, the best option may be to go through StartSSL for certificate issuance. While Let's Encrypt is a viable option, its client is still in its early stages and may be difficult to work with. It's worth noting that third-party clients for Let's Encrypt are also not fully developed.

Another option to consider is getting free certificates from the Chinese provider, https://buy.wosign.com/free/?lan=en, which has a strong track record of providing excellent working certificates at no cost.

Choosing the right SSL certificate provider depends on your specific needs and requirements. Let's Encrypt and DigiCert are both reputable options, but they differ in a few key aspects.

Let's Encrypt is a widely recognized and trusted provider that offers free SSL certificates. It has gained popularity for its ease of use and automated certificate management. While it may not have the same level of brand recognition as some paid options, Let's Encrypt certificates are trusted by major browsers, making them a reliable choice.

On the other hand, DigiCert is a well-established certificate authority known for its strong encryption and extensive validation processes. DigiCert certificates come with additional features like warranty protection and extended validation (EV) options. However, they can be more costly compared to Let's Encrypt.

If your website requires a higher level of trust, such as for e-commerce or financial transactions, DigiCert might be a better fit. Their certificates offer more comprehensive validation and come with additional features that could benefit your business. On the other hand, if you're primarily looking for a cost-effective solution, Let's Encrypt can provide security without any direct expense.

Ultimately, the choice between Let's Encrypt and DigiCert will depend on your specific needs, budget, and level of trust required for your website.
