Choosing the Server Operating system depends upon the applications used to built your website. If you have a website built in asp, asp.net or MS-SQL or you are willing to use any Microsoft application like ColdFusion or any other, you will have to opt for a Windows based hosting plan. If you have a website built in PHP or HTML, than you can opt for a Linux based hosting plan.

Depends on what you can or cannot operate, the type of technologies used at your site and your own preferrance.
I woudl recommend linux VPS, such as offered by hostv.com.

It happened so that the choice of OS depends on your personal needs.
if you are planning to host such application as ASP - choose windows VPS;
if you are going to run PHP application - Linux VPS will be reasonable choice in terms of pricing.
As for recommendation, have a look at AJKservers.co.uk - it offers both Linux and Windows VPS deals and has good reputation.. hope it will be useful.

Linux is wider used because of the stability and costlessness.
The good quality linux VPS are provided by hostingsource.com and greenolivetree.net hosting companies. Experienced and stable.

Being a linux fan I shall certainly recommend linux VPS, but in fact the better is the one you get better performance with. This varies from host to host and site to site.
May recommend greenolivetree.net for dealing with.

Unless you want to run .net, go for Linux. LAMP(Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP] is the server choice of the majority, when it comes to web hosting.

Choice of server operating system depends on the programs used to create your website. If you have a website built in asp, asp.net or MS-SQL, or you are ready to use a program such as Microsoft or any other ColdFusion, you must choose a Windows hosting plan. If you have a website built in PHP or HTML that you can choose a plan based on Linux.

Re:
In my opinion, Windows will be more beneficial for you. You can easily get help from net. This is the major benefit of windows hosting. Whereas in Linus hosting, You have more knowledge in compare to windows. I think this is drawback of Linux.

Like most other users said: if you use PHP & MySQL to create your websites, you go with Linux VPS. if you use .Net/ASP & MS SQL to create your websites, you go with Windows VPS.
If you are thinking to be a web hosting provider you may want to have both. VPSes are cheap these days. You can have both so you can get both linux and windows customers.
Just want to let you that most Windows Control Panels such as WebsitePanel support both PHP+MySQL and .NET/ASP + MS SQL. You can get both with one VPS.
Running PHP+MySQL on a windows server is not recommended, but it can be done.
