Server Uptime and Network Uptime?

Dop you think it's important to tell one from another if your host says 100% uptime guarantee?

I think there are very few hosting providers which offer 100% uptime on their Shared and VPS hosting plans. Generally 100% uptime is offered only on Cloud or Dedicated servers. You need to check whether the Hosting provider really offers 100% uptime or its just a marketing stratergy, which is said and never offered in reality. You also need to check the server uptime for previous months which is offered by the hosting company, so you will get a clear idea about 100% uptimr being offered or not.

It depends if the hosting provider has their own network - the smaller ones are simply renting space from an upstream company and are totally dependent on their network.

Both...and NO ONE can guarantee 100% uptime. The only real down time is when we reboot the servers once a week to clear the cache.

Absolutely it is important to distinguish between the two: the network could be up but the server your site is hosting on could be inaccessible. Before you sign up with a host it is also important to ask your new provider what compensation is available if they fail to meet their uptime guarantee, and how they calculate the uptime (is scheduled maintenance counted as downtime, for example).
