Greetings,

As a newcomer to the industry, I have noticed that there is a lack of comprehensive guides that focus on the VPS industry. While many companies offer hosting reselling plans, they may not be sufficient for someone who wants to learn the ins and outs of the trade. After doing some research over 48 hours, I have learned that it is best to purchase a dedicated server, install CentOs 7 as the operating system, and then prepare KVM and Virtualizor to set up a VPS hosting business.

My plan is to purchase a dedicated server from PheonixNap and go through the process of trial and error to learn how to properly set up VPS instances. However, I would like to know if there are any guides or videos that you could recommend to make the learning process easier and more efficient.

Thank you!

It's great that you're eager to learn more about VPS hosting. I understand that installing CentOS is just one aspect of the process, and choosing the right virtualizor software is equally important. While Virtualizor is one option, there are many other pre-packaged software setups available such as SolusVM and others.

If your ultimate goal is to sell this as a service, it might be worth considering what billing/automation software you plan on using. This can help guide you in making the right choices for your setup.

I agree with your suggestion of getting a used PC to practice on if buying a dedicated server is not an option. Learning through trial and error is a great way to understand the inner workings of VPS and gain practical experience.

It's also essential to research extensively on security and hardening your servers/VPSs. Additionally, renting a $5 VPS from DO, Vultr or Linode can be a cost-effective way to learn and experiment with VPS hosting.

Thank you for sharing your opinion!

Virtualizor is a powerful tool that enables efficient management of multiple nodes and hosted virtual machines. With its clustering support feature, users can easily manage slave servers directly from the master server, even if they have multiple Virtualizor webservers.

Setting up clustering with Virtualizor is straightforward and convenient. Users can add or remove servers from the cluster within minutes through the panel, without having to configure additional settings manually.
Additionally, the platform allows users to control server resources for both master and slave webservers, including RAM, disk usage, and more.

I can recommend a few resources that may help you in your journey to learn more about setting up VPS instances and running a VPS hosting business. Here are some suggestions:

1. Online tutorials and guides: Websites like DigitalOcean, Linode, and Vultr provide comprehensive tutorials and documentation on setting up and managing VPS instances. These resources cover various topics, including server setup, Linux administration, security, and more.

2. YouTube videos: YouTube is a great platform to find video tutorials on VPS setup and management. Channels such as "LearnLinuxTV" and "The Urban Penguin" offer detailed guides on topics like virtualization, server management, and specific tools like KVM and Virtualizor.

3. Online forums and communities: Participating in online forums and communities, such as Reddit's r/webhosting or webhostingtalk.com, can be valuable for learning from experienced professionals and getting answers to specific questions or issues you may encounter.

4. Official documentation: Visit the official websites of the software or tools you plan to use, such as CentOS, KVM, and Virtualizor. They usually provide detailed documentation and guides to help you get started.

Here are a few more suggestions for resources that can help you in your journey to learn and set up VPS instances:

1. Online courses and learning platforms: Websites like Udemy, Coursera, and LinkedIn Learning offer various courses on virtualization, Linux administration, and setting up VPS instances. These courses often provide structured content and hands-on exercises to enhance your learning experience.

2. Books and eBooks: There are several books available that cover the topic of virtualization and VPS hosting. Some recommended titles include "Virtualization Essentials" by Matthew Portnoy, "Mastering KVM Virtualization" by Humble Devassy Chirammal, and "The Book of Xen" by Chris Takemura.

3. Vendor-specific resources: If you're planning to use specific tools or software from vendors like PheonixNap, check if they have any documentation, tutorials, or blogs that can help you with the setup process. Often, vendors want to support their customers and provide resources to assist with their solutions.

4. Online communities and social media groups: Joining online communities and groups focused on VPS hosting or virtualization on platforms like Discord, Slack, or Facebook can be helpful. You can interact with like-minded individuals, ask questions, and learn from others in the industry.

5. Blogs and websites: Many individuals and companies in the hosting industry maintain blogs where they share insights, tutorials, and best practices. Some popular hosting-related blogs include DigitalOcean's blog, Linode's blog, ServerFault, and Scott Lowe's blog.

Few more suggestions for resources that can help you deepen your understanding of VPS hosting:

1. Web hosting conferences and events: Attending industry conferences and events focused on web hosting, cloud computing, and virtualization can be a great way to learn from industry experts and network with professionals in the field. Events like HostingCon, CloudFest, and WHD.global feature educational sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities.

2. Online webinars and podcasts: Many companies and professionals in the hosting industry host webinars and podcasts where they discuss topics related to VPS hosting, virtualization, and server management. Keep an eye out for these webinars and podcasts as they often provide valuable insights and practical tips.

3. Case studies and success stories: Reading case studies and success stories from successful VPS hosting businesses can provide real-world examples of how others have built and scaled their operations. Look for case studies on company websites, industry publications, and hosting forums.

4. Hands-on experience and experimentation: As you mentioned, trial and error can be a powerful learning tool. Once you have set up your dedicated server and installed the necessary software, take the time to experiment, test different configurations, and troubleshoot issues that may arise. Learning from hands-on experience can be invaluable.

5. Networking and mentorship: Connect with professionals and experts in the hosting industry through LinkedIn, industry events, or professional organizations. Building relationships with experienced individuals can provide opportunities for mentorship, knowledge sharing, and guidance on best practices.
