As a small business owner, I currently utilize a full-service provider that requires me to access a web-based dashboard to make any necessary adjustments. Unfortunately, this method can become quite costly. Therefore, I am exploring the possibility of transitioning to my own hosted infrastructure.

Can you offer any advice on what I would need and how to set up a VoIP system from start to finish? I'm interested in any tips or tricks that could make this process more efficient.

To set up a VoIP system, there are two main components that you will need: a VOIP line operator and an Asterisk server. The VOIP line operator manages your phone connection, while the Asterisk server provides a web interface for configuring Asterisk.

Popular options for VOIP line operators include Vitality.com, les.net, and DIDforsale.com. As for the Asterisk server, free distributions such as PBXinaFlash and AsteriskNOW are available, and the server requirements are usually minimal.

To complete the setup, you will also need a phone with SIP support. Aastra, Grandstream, and Polycom are some of the most popular brands.

After obtaining all three components, configure the Asterisk server to communicate with your VOIP provider, and then configure your phone to communicate with the Asterisk server.

Keep in mind the following tips:

- Make sure your system password is secure to prevent hacking and telemarketing.
- The system can be simple or complex depending on your preferences; start small and add more features as needed.
- In case of any internet connectivity issues, your phone system may not work properly.

When setting up a network on your own, it's essential to consider various factors like the reliability of your internet provider and the power supply at the deployment site. If you consolidate all lines into one, disruption of power or internet connection will cut off the entire network. Therefore, it's wise to use a VPN instead of opening your equipment to the world, although operators tend to charge exorbitant prices for this service.

In terms of equipment, using IP phones with PoE looks more reasonable than investing in multiport gateways, which can be expensive to maintain. You can save money by transferring city lines to SIP and integrating them into one trunk. A corporate phone book and text messaging features can also be useful.

For connecting to the PBX of city lines, you can consider gateways like the Cisco vg224, although its support will end in 2022. So, it's important to explore newer alternatives to the product.
