I am looking for tips to improve my on site traffic and would appreciate your help.
I have tried to build backlinks from several social bookmarking sites and online directories along with forums and backlinks from related sites. Still the amount of traffic coming into the site is not very impressive.

I am now beginning to get very desperate. Can someone suggest any good techniques to improve the flow of traffic to my site? This has been a problem since the last few months.

You can increase traffic to your website by following techniques:
- Keyword optimization for increasing your SERP rankings
- Publish quality content on your website
- Blogging, Blog commenting and guest blogging
- Video marketing
- Get active on social networking websites
- Article marketing
- E-mail marketing
- Social bookmarking submission

It is important to understand that there are completely different normal traffic indicators for different niches. Therefore, first of all, it is important to find out what the maximum number of visits per month you can count on. This can be done in two steps:

Analysis of competitors. Based on the traffic of several direct competitors of your web resource, you can find out the average traffic in a niche. Tools will help in this: SimilarWeb or Spy Metrics. But it is important to remember that the most accurate data can only be obtained by researching websites operating in the same region as you and offering a similar product.
Demand analysis. Google Trends will help with this. Google Trends allows you to determine the dynamics of changes in user interest in certain topics: seasonal demand, general growth or decline in interest over the past few years.
If you provide a unique product that the audience is not yet familiar with, then it will be more difficult to obtain data on possible web traffic, since the main source of traffic in the early stages of development will be advertising channels, not search results. A full-scale marketing research is needed, including segmentation and the study of the target audience, consumer surveys and the study of indirect competitors.

Site audit
The reasons for low attendance should be identified first. To do this, specialists conduct a comprehensive audit of the resource, where they determine:

technical condition;
errors in search engine optimization;
the main reasons for the departure of your visitors.
If the problem lies in poor design, or the resource is simply outdated, the only solution is to create a new resource, taking into account individual business goals. At the same time, specialists can save about 90% of your current traffic and link juice using redirects.

If the site has become a victim of inept marketing, then you should re-engage in its promotion. A comprehensive audit allows you to identify and eliminate most of the technical errors during optimization: duplicate pages and content, broken links, lack of CNC, etc. Then proceed to the steps listed below.

Check site for filters
Due to Google filters, a site can dramatically lose a significant share of search traffic. The reasons for falling under the filters are different:

using black hat or gray hat SEO techniques;
bulk purchase of links;
many technical errors on the site;
placement of re-optimized or non-unique content;
viruses or hаcking.
The result of such sanctions can be either a simple pessimization of some pages, or the removal of a site from the index, in whole or in part. The filter notification can be seen in the panel in Google Search Console.

To get rid of the filter, you need to understand and eliminate the cause, and then contact the technical support of the search engine or wait for reindexing to remove sanctions. The main reasons are described in the notice, and for additional information, you can contact the technical support of the search engine.

Semantic core extension
The semantic core (SE) should contain the maximum number of query groups for which your site can provide a relevant response. It determines the number of search results pages on which your resource will be present.

To expand the semantic core, experts use tools: Key Collector, Serpstat, etc. But collecting keys is only part of the work. Next, you need to manually exclude any irrelevant queries, since the services do not work perfectly. The following types of keys should be excluded from the SA:

goods or services that you do not provide;
mentions of cities and countries where you do not provide services;
names of competitive organizations;
words that mislead the user or lead to non-targeted traffic: "free", "inexpensive", "used", etc.;
misspelled words.
After collecting the keys, they must be combined into groups that reveal a separate topic - clustered. Each group should be on a separate page to avoid keyword cannibalization - a phenomenon when the pages of the site compete in the issuance of each other.

When collecting the semantic core, you should not ignore queries with low frequency. For example, these can be keys with long tails: "Buy a men's winter coat in Kyiv", instead of "buy a coat."
Such keywords will bring fewer visitors, but such users are usually more interested in a purchase (or other targeted action) and are easier to convert. Also, you will be able to quickly get positions in the TOP-3 due to low competition.

UI experts recommend updating the design at least once every 3 years. These can be both cardinal changes: a complete redesign of the visual design, corporate identity and interface, or gradual ones.

The design determines how a new visitor perceives the site. If the design is outdated, or looks less attractive than the competition, then new users will be less likely to stick with it. But if you already have a formed permanent audience, then it is important not to scare them off with an updated design, because not everyone likes changes in the old familiar design.

Therefore, for sites with a large proportion of repeat visitors, we recommend changing the design gradually, based on the results of split tests. You can monthly test various options for changing the interface and analyze user reactions to them, leaving the most effective ones.

But it is worth remembering that this approach requires much more time. Sometimes a complete redesign will be much more effective. Consider the main cases:

the website used a template design - in this case, gradual improvements will be too labor-intensive, or even impossible;
The bounce rate is constantly rising, especially if visitors leave in the first few seconds of browsing;
attendance is too low and practically does not grow for a long time;
the site does not convert traffic into leads or customers;
design has not changed for more than 6 years.
In such cases, it is necessary to re-create a visual design based primarily on the analysis of user preferences and modern design trends.
