Should one consider putting the server on their balcony and connecting two different providers for internet access just in case? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this approach?

One potential concern that comes to mind, at least from my perspective, is the possibility of power outages.

It's simpler to handle a small home hobby this way. If your audience grows and becomes more serious, you will eventually need to use hosting to avoid dependence on home problems and hardware. Starting out, this should not be an issue.

When it comes to hosting/VPS (Virtual Private Server), it's best to understand why you need it before making any arrangements. Until then, hosting your website at home is a viable option.

Although it may initially seem that having a personal server is more convenient and simpler, this is only true if you have extra time for maintenance.
When hosting a server at home, several factors require your attention such as ensuring the stability of the Internet connection and setting up a backup channel, power supply, maintaining the temperature, humidity, and cleanliness in the room, and even dealing with potential flooding from neighbors above.

Furthermore, running a full-fledged server requires significant energy consumption and can generate a lot of noise. While these issues are solvable with the right resources, one must question whether it is worth investing time and effort into them.

While it's possible to experiment with hosting a server based on a router/nasa or Raspberry Pi, it only makes sense as a permanent production solution if you already have good hardware, cheap internet, and electricity.

Things are easier now. If you have a server that isn't being utilized, you can make use of it. Alternatively, you can opt for VPS or hosting options.

With the prevalence of VPS and hosting options, it's become easier for individuals and businesses to take advantage of unused server space. By doing so, they can save money while still maintaining their desired level of functionality.

I would advise against placing the server on the balcony and connecting to two different internet providers for several reasons.

Advantages:
1. Redundancy: Connecting to two different internet providers can provide redundancy, ensuring that if one provider experiences an outage, the server can still connect to the internet through the second provider.
2. Load balancing: With multiple internet connections, you might have the opportunity to distribute the network load between the providers, potentially improving overall performance and stability.

Disadvantages:
1. Environmental hazards: Placing the server on the balcony exposes it to various environmental risks, including temperature fluctuations, moisture, and physical damage from weather conditions or other external factors.
2. Security risk: A server located on a balcony is more susceptible to theft, tampering, and unauthorized access, posing a significant security risk compared to a server housed in a secure, controlled environment.
3. Power outages: Balconies typically lack the infrastructure for power backup, making the server vulnerable to power outages, which could significantly disrupt its operation.
4. Legal and zoning issues: Placing equipment on a balcony may violate building regulations, landlord agreements, or homeowner association rules, leading to potential legal or zoning complications.

Given these in-depth considerations, it's crucial to prioritize the security, environmental stability, and legal compliance of the server environment. For critical hosting needs, it is generally advisable to house servers in controlled, secure data center facilities equipped with redundant power and network connectivity, along with robust security measures. Implementing off-site backup solutions or failover systems can provide effective redundancy without compromising the server's security, stability, and legal compliance.
