Title: Officially find out and block domain names that someone has registered
Post by: amiejemner on Dec 16, 2022, 06:02 AM
Is there a way to officially identify and block domains that have been registered using my passport information? It is possible for Whois to conceal the registrar's identity, making it difficult to access accounts where my passport data is being used. Sending requests to delete every domain name registrar may not be the best solution.

In case of such unpleasant situations, it is important to consider the possibilities and expectations. This issue is not just limited to domain registration, but also applies to server rental, VPS, and other related services. Additionally, Russian Federation law requires storage and reporting of data for six months, which could be used against the person in question. Waiting for something to happen on its own is not an ideal solution. As an ordinary person, what options are available in such scenarios?

There is no other option but to accept your situation if someone has registered a domain using your passport information. However, there may be a silver lining to this cloud. Access to your domain can still be restored through technical support.

Is wanting to know about your domains different from wanting to know everything about someone else? It is unlikely that you would go around presenting your passport to various domain registrars around the world. It's possible for others to use this scheme to their advantage, so it's safe to say that such a scheme doesn't exist.

Firstly, it's important to understand that domain registration and ownership information can often be obfuscated through the use of privacy protection services or proxy registrations. This makes it challenging to directly identify the individual(s) responsible for the malicious domain registrations.

However, there are steps you can take to mitigate the impact and potentially identify the perpetrators:

1. Domain Name Abuse Reporting:
  - Contact the domain registrar(s) directly and file abuse reports for each domain registered using your personal information. Provide evidence of the unauthorized use and request the immediate suspension and/or transfer of the domains to your control.
  - Reach out to domain name industry organizations, such as ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), and file formal complaints about the misuse of your identity. These organizations have processes in place to investigate and potentially take action against abusive domain registrations.

2. Law Enforcement Involvement:
  - Depending on the severity and cross-jurisdictional nature of the issue, consider reporting the incident to law enforcement authorities, such as the police or cybercrime units. They may be able to investigate the matter further and potentially identify the individuals responsible.
  - Provide all relevant dоcumentation, including evidence of the unauthorized domain registrations, to assist the law enforcement investigation.

3. Credit Monitoring and Identity Theft Protection:
  - Closely monitor your credit reports and financial accounts for any other signs of identity theft or unauthorized activities. Enroll in a credit monitoring service to receive alerts about suspicious activities.
  - Consider placing a credit freeze on your credit file to prevent new accounts from being opened in your name without your consent.

4. Proactive Domain Monitoring:
  - Regularly search for your name, personal information, and associated keywords in domain name databases and registries to identify any new or existing domains that may be registered using your details.
  - Set up alerts or notifications with domain registrars and industry organizations to be notified of any changes or new registrations linked to your personal information.

5. Legal Assistance:
  - Consult with a legal professional, such as a cybersecurity attorney, to understand your rights and explore potential legal avenues for addressing the unauthorized domain registrations. They may be able to assist with sending cease and desist letters, initiating domain name disputes, or pursuing legal action against the perpetrators.

The specific laws and regulations surrounding domain name abuse and identity theft may vary depending on your geographical location. Consulting with local legal experts and following the appropriate reporting and escalation channels can help ensure the most effective response to your situation.

Contact major domain registrars and ICANN directly to report identity theft - most have fraud desks to handle such messes. Provide any proof (like passport copies or ID theft reports) to back your claim. For WHOIS privacy, registrars often hide registrant info, but they're obligated to disclose it under legal pressure or abuse claims.

File a police report or cybercrime complaint in your jurisdiction to create a paper trail; this can push registrars to act. For servers or VPS rentals, reach out to hosting providers with the same evidence-many have strict KYC (Know Your Customer) policies and will nuke fraudulent accounts. Data retention laws are a double-edged sword, they might help trace the perp if law enforcement gets involved, but don't bank on quick action.
