Unsuccessful Complaint to ICANN: Challenges in Retrieving Stolen Domains

When you are unfamiliar with the domain deletion cycle, making uninformed accusations can be quite embarrassing.

A review posted on Trustpilot about Dan.com recounts someone's anxiety in trying to "catch" a domain before it expired and their shocked reaction when Dan.com "stole" it.

According to Mr. Darren Lawrence:

"Domain stolen on the day of expiration before repurchase. Client had owned the domain, which was their intellectual property for over 12 years. They faced difficulties in gaining control of the domain from the previous provider. The client used GoDaddy to monitor its expiration multiple times to repurchase it but couldn't find access in time.

On the day of expiration (early morning), they attempted to buy the domain from a new provider (Fasthosts) but discovered that it had been purchased by Dan.com, who demanded €2k to release it!

Filing a complaint with ICANN failed... and this is not even a typical domain. How is this allowed? I will never use or recommend GoDaddy again... bunch of thieves and hijackers. I have read many similar cases where domains were added to the cart, only to find out they were now owned by GoDaddy (Dan) and classified as premium! Lies!"

Naturally, a domain that has expired and dropped is usually picked up by a drop-catching service. The person who successfully backordered it becomes the legitimate owner and can do as they please with it. By listing the domain for sale on Dan.com, it becomes available for others to purchase at the listed price.

Dan.com does not own the domain names listed on its platform. It serves as a marketplace for advertising domain names for sale and connecting buyers and sellers. Complaining to ICANN about a dropped domain is also ineffective; otherwise, ICANN would receive over 100k complaints daily!
