Dynadot Emails Blocked Again

A few months back, I stopped getting transaction emails from Dynadot. After a lot of back and forth with both Dynadot and Siteground (who was hosting my web and email at that point), Siteground finally told me this:

"I have forwarded the information to our system admins, and they confirmed that the entire 166.88.1.0/16 IP range is blocked because of thousands of phishing and malicious attacks aimed at our servers. Our admins have sent multiple complaints to dynadot.com's official email but haven't received any responses to many of them. Since dynadot.com's IPs are a threat to the sites we host, we can't whitelist them, and our firewall will keep blocking all their requests."

Since I have tons of domains registered with Dynadot and need to be able to receive emails from them, I decided to leave Siteground.

Now it's happening again with emails coming through Porkbun. I really don't want to keep switching my email hosting, hoping that I can still get Dynadot emails.

Is anyone else having these problems with Dynadot? They should be making more effort to respond to Siteground and others to avoid getting blocked. I wonder how many email providers are blocking them. It's really frustrating not to be able to rely on getting emails from my registrar about my domains.

This kind of issue can definitely be frustrating, especially when it involves important emails from your domain registrar like Dynadot.

Understanding the IP Block: The problem you're facing stems from Siteground blocking an entire IP range (166.88.1.0/16) due to reported phishing and malicious activities. This is a common security measure taken by hosting providers to protect their customers from spam, phishing, and other types of online attacks. If an IP address or a range is associated with malicious activities, many hosting providers will block it outright to prevent any harm.

Why Dynadot is Blocked: It appears that the IP range used by Dynadot's mail servers has been flagged for such activities, which is why Siteground, and potentially other hosting providers, are blocking them. If Dynadot is not responding to abuse reports or is unable to control the malicious activities coming from their IP range, providers like Siteground have no choice but to block the IP range entirely to protect their customers.

Impact on Email Delivery: This means any emails sent from Dynadot to customers who have their emails hosted on servers that block this IP range will not get through. As you've experienced, you stopped getting transaction emails from Dynadot because Siteground blocked them, and now you're having the same issue with Porkbun, another email hosting provider.

Possible Solutions:

Switching Email Hosting: One solution, as you've already tried, is switching email hosting providers. However, this is not a guaranteed fix since other hosting providers might also block Dynadot's IP range for the same reasons, especially if Dynadot doesn't address the root cause of the problem. This would result in an endless loop of switching providers.

Contacting Dynadot: You should contact Dynadot directly and inform them about this issue. Explain that their emails are being blocked due to IP blacklisting and that you're unable to receive important communications. It's in their best interest to address this because it's not just affecting you but potentially many other customers.

Whitelisting: Some email hosting providers offer the option to whitelist specific email addresses or IP ranges. You could ask Porkbun if they provide this option. However, based on the message you received from Siteground, they are not willing to whitelist because they see Dynadot's IPs as a significant threat.

Use a Different Email Address: You could consider setting up an email address with a different provider, like Gmail or Outlook, specifically for receiving emails from Dynadot. These providers have robust spam filters and security measures, but they also have the capability to handle legitimate emails more flexibly.

Custom Email Filters: If you're able to access any settings on your email hosting that allow for custom filtering, you might be able to create a rule that moves Dynadot's emails to a specific folder or marks them in a way that bypasses some of the stricter spam checks.

Long-term Considerations: If Dynadot doesn't address these issues with their IP range, it could potentially harm their reputation and customer trust. Hosting providers will continue to block IPs associated with spam or malicious activity, and more customers will face similar issues. Dynadot needs to respond to abuse reports and work on cleaning up their IP reputation to prevent being blacklisted by more providers.

Checking IP Reputation: You can use services like MXToolbox or Spamhaus to check the reputation of Dynadot's IP addresses. If they are listed on several blacklists, that confirms the issue is widespread. This also gives you concrete information to bring to Dynadot's attention.

Communicating With Your Registrar: You might consider sending a formal complaint or request for support to Dynadot. If they hear from enough customers, they may be more motivated to address the IP blacklist issue with urgency.
