Registering a domain with a registrar from China can be a bit tricky, especially if you encounter the phone number field asking for +85. First, it's important to note that +85 is not actually a valid country code. The correct code for China is +86.

When you're registering a domain, most registrars use phone numbers for verification purposes. They want to make sure that they can contact you if there's any issue with your domain or account. Some registrars may require a valid phone number, while others might allow alternative numbers, so it really depends on the specific registrar's policies.

You should not just put any random number. Doing so can lead to complications later on. If the registrar tries to contact you and the number isn't valid, this could lead to your domain being placed on hold or even cancelled.

My suggestion would be to use a valid phone number that you can access. If you don't have a number for China, you could consider using services that provide virtual phone numbers. These services can give you a local number that can receive calls and even messages, so you can verify your account without any issues.
Make sure to double-check all other information you provide during the registration process. Small mistakes in your information can lead to bigger problem in the future when you need to update your details or if you run into any issues.

get a number from China on Skype. I recollect the time I purchased an American number as well.

After giving it a go, I can confirm that the Chinese number is functional:

You can go ahead and subscribe for a Skype number.

For a three-month subscription, it costs $19.00, which includes VAT.

If you're looking to commit for the whole year, it's $61.00, also with VAT included.

What domain are you choosing for registration? What zone does it belong to? And what it is for?

The +85 prefix is just a minor annoyance, and it's worth it to get a unique and memorable domain name. Besides, what's the worst that could happen? They steal your identity and sell your personal information on the black market? Please, it's not like it's the first time that's happened.
Just be careful and make sure you understand the terms and conditions of the registrar's services, and you'll be fine.
