Choosing a domain registrar

Hey there! I am not well-versed in the intricacies of buying, renewing and protecting domain names, so I would appreciate some guidance.

I require multiple domains in both the FR and international zones for key "white" projects, and I want to ensure maximum protection from sanctions, similar to those imposed by GoDaddy.

Therefore, my questions are as follows:

- Which registrar, specifically, should I consider? Should I purchase domain names from multiple registrars instead?
- What measures should one undertake to fully safeguard their domain name?
- I have heard of specialized registrars that offer domain name protection such as Brandnames, Safenames and Cloudflare. Can someone educate me on the details of this protection and whether it's worth investing in?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!

Moniker, Enom, Gandi are registrars that come to mind. It's important to note that everything changes and support may act in an illogical manner regardless of the situation. The best course of action is to have a US entity and registrar to allow for quick responses while also adhering to the law (which can be expensive). This means having valid American documentation to avoid complications.

Unfortunately, there is no protection for a .com domain if a US court orders its transfer. However, everyone is protected from theft through various measures such as the inability to transfer within 60 days of registration. Registrars also offer features like not disclosing the domain name without additional information (which you would need to request).

International zones allow for more freedom, but they also pose problems. For instance, if you transfer a domain name to an Indian registrar and there is a dispute, you may not receive a favorable decision. UDRP can also cost a lot of money. Consider using a registrar like Google Domains, but remember that even Evil Corporations may not respond to emails.

To maximize security, it's advisable to choose separate registrars for .FR and .COM domains instead of keeping them in one location. You could even use different registrars for different domains. The ultimate goal is to select a reliable and trustworthy registrar.

I purchased domains on Amazon AWS without encountering any issues or marketing tactics.

However, one downside is that Google Domains is only available in a limited number of countries. Hopefully, they will expand their reach to include Russia and all of Europe. One even better scenario would be for them to establish their own domain zone and offer free or symbolic one-dollar-per-year domain names. (I am aware of their existing .google zone, but I doubt they will distribute/sell domains there.)

I can provide guidance on the measures you should take to safeguard your domains and the options for domain name protection.

1. Registrar Selection:
When it comes to purchasing domain names, it's essential to choose a reputable registrar that offers a wide range of services and robust security features. For your specific needs, I would recommend considering registrars such as Namecheap, Gandi, or OVH for both FR and international domain zones. These registrars are known for their transparent pricing, strong security measures, and excellent customer support. While purchasing from multiple registrars is an option, consolidating your domains with one reputable registrar can streamline management and potentially provide better pricing for bulk purchases.

2. Safeguarding Your Domain Name:
To fully safeguard your domain name, you should consider implementing several measures. Firstly, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your registrar account to add an extra layer of security. Regularly monitor and update your contact information and ensure that your domains are set to auto-renew to prevent expiration. Additionally, consider purchasing Whois Privacy protection to shield your personal information from public access and potential abuse. Lastly, it's crucial to maintain strong and unique passwords for your registrar account and associated email addresses.

3. Specialized Domain Name Protection:
Specialized registrars such as Brandnames, Safenames, and Cloudflare offer additional domain name protection services, including brand monitoring, trademark validation, and DNS security. These services can help protect your domains from potential trademark infringements, domain hijacking, and DDoS attacks. While these protections come at an additional cost, they can provide peace of mind and added security, especially for high-profile and crucial projects.
