I've noticed that Hostgator has recently undergone a portal redesign. When I logged in to request authorization codes for some of my domains with them, the process involved several steps and ended with the message:

QuoteYour request for an Auth Code has been received and your information will be validated to ensure the security of your account. If your request is approved, you will receive your Auth Code by email in 3 days.

To cancel this request, please call one of our Customer Service Representatives at 1-866-455-1655. .

This situation is quite concerning. Is this in compliance with ICANN rules? Is there any way to expedite this process? And how do they validate the security of my account? It's alarming that they even mention "IF your request is approved... ?

Regarding ICANN rules, the organization requires domain registrars to provide a straightforward process for domain owners to obtain authorization codes, also known as EPP codes, for domain transfers. The requirement is that the authorization codes should be provided promptly and without unnecessary delays.

In your case, the message about the 3-day waiting period and the conditional approval may seem to contradict these guidelines. It's not typical for domain registrars to impose such lengthy waiting periods for authorization codes. ICANN stipulates that the transfer process should be smooth and timely to ensure the freedom of domain owners to move their domains between registrars.

As for expediting the process, it's important to reach out to Hostgator's customer service to express your concerns. You can inquire about any expedited options they might have or escalate the request to ensure a quicker resolution. Additionally, if there are specific reasons for needing the authorization codes urgently, such as an impending domain transfer, it's vital to communicate this clearly to the customer service representatives.

Regarding the security validation process, domain registrars typically have measures in place to ensure the security of account information and domain transfers. This may involve verifying the identity of the person requesting the authorization code and confirming ownership of the domain. The language used in the message you received, particularly the conditional approval statement, could certainly be improved to provide more clarity on the security validation process.
It's essential to engage with Hostgator's customer service to seek clarification on the process, express your concerns about compliance with ICANN rules, and explore options for expediting the authorization code request. Transparency and clear communication regarding the security validation process will help alleviate any apprehensions about the handling of your account and domain transfers.
