Title: Domain or Hosting - What Should You Get First?
Post by: alexamata on Aug 20, 2023, 12:36 AM
Which should come first, the domain or the hosting? When purchasing a domain, you must provide name servers. On the other hand, when acquiring hosting, you need a domain name.

When it comes to purchasing a domain and hosting, there is no fixed order that needs to be followed. The choice between which one to acquire first depends on your specific needs and preferences.

If you already have a domain name in mind or have already registered one elsewhere, then it makes sense to purchase the hosting first. Once you have the hosting set up, you can simply update the domain's name servers to point to your hosting provider.

On the other hand, if you have not yet chosen a domain name, it may be beneficial to purchase the domain first. This way, you can make sure the desired domain is available and secure it before someone else does. After acquiring the domain, you can then proceed to set up hosting and update the domain's name servers accordingly.

When it comes to the technical aspects, it is often recommended to purchase the domain name first. This allows you to have control over your desired domain and ensure that it is available. Once you have the domain, you can then choose a hosting provider and point your domain's name servers to the hosting server.

However, some hosting providers offer free domain registration or provide an option to purchase a domain during the hosting setup process. In such cases, it is possible to acquire both the domain and hosting simultaneously.

Additionally, if you are just starting out and do not have a specific domain name in mind, some hosting providers offer temporary domains or subdomains that you can use until you decide on a permanent domain.

No distinction exists. However, it is preferable to acquire a domain beforehand as numerous domain name registrars cater to the scenario where the buyer does not possess hosting and thus offer their DNS servers for parking the recently purchased domain. Furthermore, some individuals purchase domains with the intention of reselling them rather than building websites, hence necessitating free DNS servers.

By purchasing a domain before securing hosting, one can take advantage of domain name registrars who provide DNS servers for parking newly acquired domains. This is particularly useful for those who buy domains for resale purposes rather than website development, as they require free DNS servers.

No difference exists in this case. You are not required to specify it immediately. If the domain was purchased first, follow these steps to purchase hosting: access the domain settings and input the addresses into the "nserver" fields (in English).

If hosting was obtained first, follow these steps to buy a domain: access the hosting settings and connect the purchased domain to it.

The domain is your digital asset, it's what people will remember and type into their browsers. Hosting is just a commodity, it's where your website lives, but it's replaceable. You should secure your domain first, to ensure no one else snaps it up. Then, you can shop around for the best hosting deal without losing your domain.
