Title: Game Server Hosting: Domain Registration and Server Setup Clarification
Post by: CarloysyOM on Jan 18, 2024, 12:56 AM
Greetings,

I represent a small team interested in setting up game servers for Minecraft, ArmaII-Dayz, Teamspeak, and other games. We are seeking guidance on server setups, particularly regarding hardware requirements and navigating through the various offers for control panels and domain needs.

We are specifically looking for a Windows Server-based system that we can remote into either via Logmein or directly with remote desktop connection. The hardware and network specifications we are considering are as follows:
- CPU: 4-8 Cores, 3Ghz+
- Memory: 8Gb - 16Gb
- Storage: 500Gb+
- Bandwidth: 6 - 10Tb Monthly
- 100Mbit connection+
- Windows Server Standard with remote desktop access
- Location: Canada / US
- Budget: $50 - $80 monthly, willing to sign for 6 months for the right price/service

We are uncertain whether our expectations align with reality. We have heard of other game administrators getting better deals than what we have listed, so we would appreciate some clarity on this matter.

We are also unsure about terminal/cpanel/Webmin options, and which of these are suitable for hosting game servers. In addition, we are unclear about DNS options. Should we register a domain name first, or when we look at offers asking for a domain name for the box, is the registration included?

Your insights and expertise on these matters would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Do you think the expectations are realistic, or are we aiming too high? What would be your advice regarding the control panel and DNS options for hosting game servers?

Your hardware requirements and budget considerations are in line with industry standards and are definitely realistic.
For the hardware setup, your CPU specifications of 4-8 Cores at 3Ghz+ and memory of 8Gb - 16Gb, along with at least 500Gb of storage and 6 - 10Tb monthly bandwidth, are well-suited for hosting game servers. In addition, aiming for a 100Mbit connection in the Canada / US region is a reasonable choice for ensuring smooth gameplay experiences for your users.

In terms of the Windows Server-based system, it's advisable to look for a hosting provider that offers Windows Server Standard with remote desktop access, as this will allow you the flexibility to remote into the server either via Logmein or directly with remote desktop connection.

Regarding the control panel options, you may want to consider panels such as Plesk or cPanel, which provide user-friendly interfaces for managing your server, including tasks like deploying and configuring game servers. These control panels can simplify the management process and offer features such as file management, automated backups, and security settings.

When it comes to DNS options, it's important to note that registering a domain name is a separate process from setting up the server. You can register a domain name through domain registrars like GoDaddy, Namecheap, or Google Domains. Once you have a registered domain, you can then point it to your server by updating the domain's DNS settings to reflect your server's IP address. Some hosting providers may offer domain registration as part of their package, so it's worth checking if this option is included in the offers you're considering.
Your expectations are well-aligned with industry standards, and with the right hosting provider, you should be able to find a suitable package within your budget. As you navigate through the various offers, make sure to inquire about the specific hardware and software configurations offered, as well as any additional services such as domain registration, to ensure they meet your requirements.
