Game servers - VDS vs Dedicated

Hello,

We are planning to launch several CS 1.6 and CSGO game servers, however, our budget is limited to around $80. Upon calculation, it seems that the cost of getting separate VPS for each server (3 cs servers and 2 csgo servers) will be around $60, including the price of ramnode.

I have found the most inexpensive dedicated server available, which is an Intel Xeon E3-1245 v5 with a clock speed of 3.5GHz and 32 GB RAM. It costs approximately $85 in total.

At this point, I'm uncertain whether it would be more beneficial to place all six servers on a dedicated server or on separate VPS for each server. Do you have any recommendations?

In terms of using the VPS option, the number of cores you utilize is a significant factor to consider, and several VPS providers prohibit game servers because of DDoS attacks.

Bare Metal is undoubtedly the superior choice. By ordering Proxmox or virtualization software, you can create virtual machines and fully allocate resources.

The primary disparity between a dedicated server and VPS is cost. In general, the maximum VPS package is cheaper than renting a dedicated server, although there are exceptions due to the weak hardware of physical machines that hosters provide.

Dedicated Game servers are costly solutions reserved for significant companies and large-scale projects. On the other hand, a VPS is an economical alternative for those who lack the capabilities of traditional hosting.

A virtual server has a more straightforward upgrade process, as many providers offer configurators to adjust specific parameters such as RAM or storage capacity. Conversely, physical Game servers are often leased with a fixed configuration, making it impossible to flexibly modify them.

If you decide to install a server on-premises or in a provider's data center, a complete cycle of modernization preparation must be performed. This involves stopping the server, transferring information to new drives, and installing new equipment.

However, in most cases, it is more profitable to opt for a VPS, even compared to renting a physical machine from a provider, let alone hosting a dedicated server in your office. Furthermore, a VPS provides root access, allowing you to configure a personalized setup to operate a web project.

In conclusion, a physical server is appropriate for larger companies and projects that require extensive data storage and full control over Game server operation. Alternatively, a reliable hosting provider can offer ample features via a virtual server for other scenarios.

Based on your budget and the number of game servers you plan to launch, it may be more cost-effective to place all six servers on a dedicated server rather than separate VPS instances.

A dedicated server offers the advantage of having all resources dedicated solely to your servers, providing better performance compared to sharing resources on VPS instances. Additionally, managing all servers in one place can be more convenient and efficient.

However, it's important to consider the potential downsides of using a dedicated server. If one server experiences heavy traffic or encounters any issues, it may impact the performance of all other servers running on the same machine. With separate VPS instances, the impact would be limited to the specific server experiencing the issue.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your specific requirements and priorities. If performance and convenience are more important, choosing a dedicated server may be the way to go. However, if you prioritize isolation and want to minimize potential issues affecting all servers, sticking with separate VPS instances might be a safer choice, albeit at a slightly higher cost.
