JupiterOne has released its second annual State of Cyber Assets Report, which found that cyber assets have grown by 133% year-over-year, from 165,000 in 2022 to 393,419 in 2023.

This increase in cyber assets has resulted in higher security complexity and pressure for cloud enterprises. Organizations have also seen a 589% increase in security vulnerabilities or unresolved findings, indicating a snowball effect as the number of assets more than doubled. Mid-sized organizations had the highest number of aggregated data sources and lowest asset-to-employee ratio, indicating better habits for asset destruction, lifecycle management, or ephemeral engineering practices.

Additionally, the report emphasizes the importance of unified cyber insights and understanding that cyber assets are business assets. Finally, the report notes that the modern attack surface is distributed.

In 2023, cybersecurity teams are responsible for an average of 334 unique Cloud Service Provider (CSP) accounts, with larger organizations managing up to 559 accounts. The distributed cloud architecture creates resiliency but also introduces unprecedented complexity for cybersecurity teams, who must deal with more assets and less standardization across CSPs.

JupiterOne's 2023 State of Cyber Assets Report provides insight into enterprise cybersecurity assets and liabilities across complex attack surfaces of cloud and physical environments. The report highlights the importance of access to existing visibility and better processes and tools for gaining greater cyber insights. JupiterOne will be present at RSA Conference San Francisco to discuss asset visibility and management.

The report highlights the alarming trend of growing vulnerabilities in digital infrastructure, including networks, systems, and applications. This presents a significant challenge for organizations and individuals in safeguarding their sensitive information from malicious actors. The report also sheds light on the evolving tactics employed by cybercriminals, emphasizing the need for continuous adaptation of security measures.

In response to this escalating threat landscape, cybersecurity engineers are compelled to develop innovative solutions to fortify defenses against cyber attacks. This involves leveraging advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and behavioral analytics to proactively identify and mitigate potential security threats. Additionally, ensuring comprehensive encryption, implementing robust access controls, and thorough security assessments are critical components of a cyber defense strategy.

The "2023 State of Cyber Report" serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to protect digital assets. As a cybersecurity engineer, I am committed to advancing the field of cybersecurity and developing cutting-edge solutions to counter the escalating cyber threats, thereby contributing to a safer digital environment for individuals and organizations alike.
