Google Cloud VMware Engine is a Google-managed VMware platform that enables users to run their VMware workloads on Google Cloud.

The new solution, which consists of VMware ESXi clusters managed by Google, aims to attract users with dependencies and allows them to manage the virtual infrastructure using VMware vCenter and VMware NSX-T.

One of the benefits of the infrastructure as code approach for a VMware Engine Private Cloud is that it provides consistent and repeatable deployment templates that can be reused across SDLC environments to reduce human error and shorten configuration times. This approach also enables continuous integration using GitOps workflows to improve collaboration between engineers and increase reliability in the release process.

Additionally, it offers version control of configuration templates to track changes in the infrastructure and reverting changes to a previous configuration becomes simple.

The Google Cloud VMware Engine IaC Foundations Github repository contains Terraform modules and sample code for maintaining VMware Engine, vCenter, and NSX-T configurations using infrastructure as code. These modules and examples are meant to be discrete and function as the building blocks for managing GCVE at scale.

Therefore, if you consider using VMware Engine for your VMware workloads or you actively use the service already, give it a try and clone the repository into your environment. You can review if you can automate any processes that you perform manually today using infrastructure-as-code and improve your VMware operations using the content from the foundations repository.

Google Cloud VMware Engine provides a high-performance, reliable and cost-effective infrastructure for running VMware workloads. This environment includes a fully redundant and dedicated 100 Gbit/s network, hyperconverged storage via the VMware vSAN stack, and latest generation processors that provide very high computing performance. With 768 GB of RAM and 19.2 TB of raw data per node, you can deploy more virtual machines with a workload per node, reducing overall cost. The computing and data storage infrastructure is dedicated to a single client.

The service is configured directly in VPC subnets, allowing you to use standard mechanisms to connect to the service. You also get direct Layer 3 private network access to workloads and services running on Google Cloud, providing faster access and higher security for a wide range of use cases. Moreover, you can use third-party tools without any changes and take advantage of Google's own cloud services and ecosystem partners to optimize your applications.

Google Cloud VMware Engine offers a rich ecosystem of services which includes disaster recovery, backup, monitoring and security capabilities. Third-party tools can be installed and configured as if they were on the spot, providing unique opportunities for ecosystem tools. Additionally, you can run third-party KMS tools externally and independently on your Compute Engine VMs to encrypt storage at rest, making your environment more secure and hassle-free.
