Title: Contabo - what's going on? What's the alternative?
Post by: Labionda on Oct 21, 2022, 11:41 AM
In the past month, the server has experienced three instances of downtime lasting for more than 12 hours. The first occurrence was due to issues with the data center, while the second was due to technical work that resulted in further breakdowns. Currently, I have a VPS and while support accepted my request, there has been no response for the past two hours.

Despite these issues, Contabo has been a great option, offering 10 vCPU Cores and 60 GB RAM for a low price of €26.99. However, as the server is located in Germany, it is unclear whether any issues such as gas shortages may arise.

Given these concerns, do you have any recommendations for European alternatives that offer reliable backbones?

I think the problem was with exactly your server.
For example, this site (dnray.com) is also located on the Contabo server.
In principle, I have been using Contabo hosting for 4 years already, I have many sites here and there were no serious problems (at least through their fault).

I've been using it for almost three years, during that time VPS was unavailable once, it lasted about two hours. No more than that.
Now everything is working, no problems.  ;)

Where to move to? Please advise a European alternative. Exactly the European backbon.
Indeed, in the last month they dropped my VPS a couple of times. For 2-3 minutes. And a couple more times (does not apply to crashes) wrote about the maintenance. But so far not critical. It will get better.
If you don't want to wait, you can try bacloud.com It is Lithuania, but the prices are average across the hospital, you can pay as you want, crypto does not take, but they take, for example, PerfectMoney...

In search of a bargain, I opted for a VDS at the cost of 9 euros per month. However, my initial excitement was short-lived.
For the first two weeks, everything seemed to be working seamlessly without any issues.
Unfortunately, problems began to arise thereafter and everything started to fall apart.
Having used rootwelt.de for four years prior to this experience, I have decided to seek out alternative hosting options after a month of issues with contabo.com. If I continue to encounter problems, I will likely return to rootwelt.de.

While Contabo has provided favorable hardware specifications and pricing, it's essential to prioritize reliability and support when considering alternatives. Given your concerns about possible disruptions, it's wise to explore providers with data centers in multiple geographic regions to mitigate risks such as gas shortages and localized technical issues.

European alternatives like Hetzner, OVH, and Linode are reputable options known for their reliability and performance. These providers offer a variety of VPS plans that could align with your needs. Evaluating customer reviews and seeking recommendations from online communities will provide insights into the experiences of other users with these providers.

When comparing alternatives, focus on not just hardware specifications and pricing, but also consider the quality of the network backbone, uptime guarantees, and customer support responsiveness. It's crucial to find a provider that offers a robust infrastructure and dependable service to ensure the stability and performance of your server environment.

If you're still contemplating sticking with Contabo, just remember: cheap can often come at a high price. Gas shortages or not, if their infrastructure can't handle the load, you'll find yourself in a precarious position.
Providers like Hetzner and Scaleway offer reliable services with transparent pricing. Don't let a low price tag blind you to the potential pitfalls.
