It's intriguing to hear the perspective of website developers. A year ago, I commissioned a business card website for $1K and coordinated the design to my liking. However, I neglected to fill it with photos of my products and essentially put the project on hold. As an inexperienced user, I wasn't aware that I needed to pay for the domain and hosting registration on an annual basis. The developer tried to reach me to warn me that the access to the site would disappear, but I missed their calls and somehow didn't receive any emails. Eventually, the site was deleted and I was told that it could only be restored for $6K. My main question is: why didn't they send me a simple email reminder instead of calling repeatedly? I would have gladly paid for the extension if I had known the consequences of my inaction.

Have you ever neglected maintaining your own website or experienced a similar situation?

Initially, the developer should have emphasized the importance of annual extensions at the onset or completion of the job. However, it's possible they mentioned it and you may have overlooked it. Additionally, if the work is done and the transaction is complete, the developer has no obligation to monitor your website for free.

Regarding your lack of knowledge about renewing the domain and web hosting, it's difficult to say. However, it's concerning that the developer did not register your email in the hosting provider's account after finishing the project- instead leaving their own email as the primary contact. This seems suspicious as warnings are sent to the contact email before the contract expires. It appears as though the developer may have been trying to take advantage of the situation for financial gain.

It's important for both parties to maintain transparency and open communication throughout the entire process to avoid misunderstandings and issues down the line. Have you ever experienced a similar situation?

Website developers typically use various methods to communicate with their clients, including emails, phone calls, and sometimes even text messages or notifications within the website builder platform. The reason your developer may have chosen to call you repeatedly instead of sending a simple email reminder could be to ensure that you received the message promptly and to emphasize the urgency of the situation. Emails can sometimes get lost in spam filters or overlooked, while phone calls tend to grab more attention. Ultimately, it's up to the developer's preferred method of communication and how they believe they can best reach their clients.

different website developers may have different practices when it comes to communication with their clients. Some developers may rely heavily on emails and may not prioritize phone calls as a means of communication. However, others may find that phone calls are more effective in conveying important information or urgent matters.

In your case, it's possible that the developer chose to call you repeatedly because they considered it a critical issue and wanted to ensure you received the message promptly. They might have thought that calling would be the most direct and immediate way to catch your attention and alert you about the imminent deletion of your website.

It's also worth mentioning that sometimes technical issues can occur, leading to emails not reaching their intended recipient or ending up in spam folders. Phone calls can help overcome these potential communication barriers.

Ultimately, every developer operates differently, and their chosen methods of communication may vary. If you have any concerns or preferences regarding how you wish to be contacted, it's worth discussing this with your developer to ensure effective communication moving forward.
