Title: Skills for an SEO Optimizer Assistant
Post by: elequeclows on Feb 05, 2024, 01:11 AM
I was approached by a 4th year student from the IT faculty seeking advice for an interview for the position of SEO optimizer assistant. The student mentioned that the job description only mentioned "website promotion" and required knowledge of HTML.

The student was informed that the interview would include a knowledge test on promotion/optimization. They were seeking advice on what kind of test to expect and how to prepare for it, as well as recommendations for relevant books.

For the interview test, the student can expect questions related to both on-page and off-page optimization techniques. On-page optimization involves factors such as keyword research, content optimization, meta tags, and HTML structure, which is why the knowledge of HTML is required for the position. The test might include scenarios where the student is asked to identify areas on a webpage that can be improved for better SEO.

In preparation for the interview, I recommend the student to focus on understanding search engine algorithms, user experience, and how to improve website visibility. They should be familiar with tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and keyword research tools. Practical experience with implementing SEO strategies on websites, even if it's from personal or academic projects, can also be beneficial to mention during the interview.

As for books, "The Art of SEO" by Eric Enge, Stephan Spencer, and Jessie Stricchiola is a comprehensive resource covering various aspects of SEO. "SEO 2019: Learn Search Engine Optimization with Smart Internet Marketing Strategies" by Adam Clarke is another practical guide that can help the student grasp the latest trends and techniques in SEO.
The student should showcase a strong understanding of SEO principles, willingness to learn and adapt to new algorithms, and the ability to analyze and optimize websites for better search engine visibility.

I have been collaborating with an assistant for the past two years, prior to that I had a different collaborator.

In my view, the assistant should be knowledgeable in the following areas:
1. Basic principles of on-page optimization (such as understanding what a keyword is, meta tags, linking, and semantic core).
2. Proficiency in working with at least one CMS (experience can compensate for knowledge of other systems).
3. Understanding of the fundamentals of off-page optimization (such as what an anchor is, and the quality indicators of backlink profiles).

It is important for the assistant's knowledge to be kept up to date by the senior optimizer who supervises them. The senior optimizer should also provide training for any areas the assistant may be unfamiliar with but are necessary for their role. For instance, I personally do this, but I have heard that in some companies, an assistant SEO optimizer may be delegated various routine tasks that other employees do not wish to handle.

They should possess strong analytical skills, be comfortable using new technologies, and quickly adapt their strategies to shifting circumstances. Writing and coding skills are also essential, as is the ability to convey the value and mechanics of SEO in a way that makes sense to non-experts.
