How I Would Approach a Point-to-Point Wireless Link for a Remote Site

When a remote building needs network connectivity, running cable or fiber is often not practical. In some cases, a point‑to‑point wireless link is a much simpler way to connect two locations.

If I were planning one, I would start by looking at the distance. The physical path between the two sites. A clear line of sight is important. I would also look for trees, buildings, terrain, and any other things that could affect the wireless path.

The next thing I would consider is the amount of traffic the wireless link actually needs to carry. A connection between two offices may have very different needs than one carrying cameras, VoIP, file transfers, or other continuous traffic.

I would also look at the equipment on both sides rather than focusing only on the advertised wireless speed. Antenna characteristics, frequency, channel conditions, Ethernet interfaces, environmental needs, and management features can all affect how useful the wireless link will be in practice.

Cambium Networks [nofollow] is one of the brands I would look at when comparing equipment for this type of deployment. I have been browsing Cambium wireless networking options on WAVOnline to get a better idea of what is available for different site‑to‑site scenarios.

Another thing I would not overlook is installation. Even good wireless equipment can perform poorly if the antennas are not properly aligned or if the mounting location is affected by the surrounding environment.

For anyone who has deployed a point‑to‑point wireless link, what was the biggest challenge in your installation?

Was it getting a line of sight, choosing the right radio, dealing with interference, or getting the alignment right?
