We are in need of a server for our organization consisting of 10-20 people, with a budget of $1K.
The server should include a domain, hosting, mail service, scada, and surveillance cameras. The latter two will need to be accessible remotely, possibly from another city or even country. Additionally, the server should handle household office tasks.
As a web developer, I am completely new to server administration and have little knowledge on the subject, other than understanding that a server is a powerful computer.
I appreciate any assistance or advice on how to build the server.

Building a server can be a complex task, especially if you are new to server administration. Given your budget and requirements, here's a general plan to help you get started:

1. Hardware: Look for a reliable server-grade computer that fits within your budget. Consider factors like processing power, RAM, storage capacity, and expandability options.

2. Operating System: Choose a server operating system that suits your needs. Popular options include Windows Server, Linux distributions like Ubuntu Server or CentOS, or FreeBSD. Evaluate their features, compatibility, and your familiarity with the operating system.

3. Domain: Register a domain name that represents your organization. There are many domain registrars available online; choose one that offers reasonable pricing and good support.

4. Hosting: Decide whether you want to host your website and web applications on the same server as your internal services or use a separate hosting provider. Shared hosting or virtual private servers (VPS) are cost-effective options for small organizations.

5. Mail Service: Consider using a cloud-based email service like Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) or Microsoft 365, where you can manage your organization's emails easily. These services offer features such as custom domain email addresses, shared calendars, and dоcument collaboration.

6. SCADA: SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems typically require specialized software and hardware. Research SCADA solutions that meet your specific requirements and ensure they are compatible with your chosen server operating system.

7. Surveillance Cameras: For remote access to surveillance cameras, you'll need IP cameras and network video recorders (NVRs). Be sure to check compatibility with your chosen server operating system and research remote access options for camera monitoring.

8. Network Configuration: Consider network security, such as firewall setup, network segmentation, and VPN access to ensure secure remote access.

9. Backup and Security: Implement regular data backups, both on-site and off-site, to protect against data loss. Additionally, ensure your server is adequately protected with security measures like firewalls, antivirus software, and frequent updates.

Note that server administration can be complex, and it may be beneficial to consult with an IT professional or consider managed hosting services if you are not confident in managing the server yourself.

If your budget is limited, you can opt for a more powerful server to handle your tasks. Consider purchasing additional disks.
Implement virtualization using VMware or Hyper-V. While ProxMox is an option, it may bring unnecessary complications. If you are not a sysadmin and prefer working in a GUI, go with Hyper-V.
Within the virtual environment, deploy the appropriate number of virtual machines that best suit your tasks. This will ensure efficiency.
For instance, I personally run three servers on Hyper-V, each hosting numerous virtual machines for clients. VLANs are used to isolate them from one another. Additionally, I have a fourth server dedicated to running MikroTik CHR, which handles all traffic.

As for video surveillance, it would be advisable to invest in a better DVR with a price range of 4-6 thousand.
Alternatively, for your specific needs, you can consider renting a VPS for each task or even renting a physical server.
If you are interested, I can offer virtual servers on any operating system for rent.

Please reach out to your system administrator to avoid any negative consequences. Additionally, be prepared to configure and replicate-reserve all necessary components to ensure a smooth installation when the $1K server arrives.
Failure to do so may result in suspension. If these requirements are not just ambitious goals for development but are indeed demanded by a business customer, it is advisable to reconsider getting involved at all. Dealing with an unreasonable customer can only lead to trouble.

A cost-effective method of setting up and managing a server for a variety of uses, such as hosting websites, applications, data storage, or network services, is referred to as a server solution. Such a system aims to deliver the required computational power and functionality without going over budget. Here are some tactics and things to think about when finding a server solution that is affordable
Internet Services
VPSs (Virtual Private Servers)
Energy-efficient hardware with the Linux operating system and server virtualization
Open Source Server Monitoring Software
Recurrent Upkeep
Backup and recovery from disaster
Scale for Managed Services Wisely
Security of DIY vs. Hosting Providers
Affordable server solutions must strike a compromise between addressing your technological needs and remaining inside your budget. Whether you need a solution for a small business website, a personal project, or a more complex enterprise application, it will rely on your unique use case.

With a budget of $1K, we need to be strategic in our choices.
First and foremost, let's start with the hardware. Given your budget, it would be best to consider a pre-owned server to maximize the available resources. Look for a server with robust processing power and ample storage capacity to handle the tasks you've outlined.

Now, let's talk about the software. For domain management, you'll need to register a domain name with a registrar. Consider a simple, yet professional, domain name that reflects your organization. As for hosting, you'll want a reliable web hosting service that offers sufficient bandwidth and storage for your needs.

For mail service, I recommend setting up a dedicated email server using open-source software like Postfix or iRedMail. This will give you full control over your organization's email communications.

When it comes to SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and surveillance cameras, you'll need to choose compatible hardware and software that support remote access. Look for SCADA systems and surveillance cameras that offer remote monitoring and control capabilities, and ensure that they are compatible with your chosen server platform.

As for the server's administrative tasks, consider using a user-friendly operating system with built-in office tools, such as Ubuntu Server with LibreOffice. This will allow for seamless handling of household office tasks.

Since you mentioned being new to server administration, I highly recommend investing some time in learning the basics of server management. There are numerous online resources, tutorials, and courses available that can help you gain the necessary knowledge to maintain and troubleshoot your server effectively.
Remember that security is paramount. Implement strong authentication methods, regularly update your software, and consider setting up a virtual private network (VPN) for secure remote access to the server.
