Hey there,

I run a small phone company that offers telephony services, which means packet loss and delays are inevitable. Recently, I experienced some downtime while hosting on Linode. So, I decided to explore other options and began renting servers from Quadrant at LAX. Although budget is not an issue and all my clients are on the west coast, I am still uncertain whether hosting the server on ESXi instead of Linode would result in better network performance.

What do you think?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I have experience working with various VoIP and phone companies, all of which require low jitter, clean bandwidth with low upward flutter, and cost-effective servers with good performance. However, many of these companies have tried using VPS, cloud hosting, and virtual machine hosting, only to abandon these options due to delays and jitter issues.

In a recent project, we used KVM virtual machines with thin hypervisors, but even this setup did not perform as well as regular dedicated servers, with the jitter remaining above desired levels. Nevertheless, if you are determined to tackle this issue, there is a solution - you can include an additional SSD hard drive and utilize extra cache to eliminate the jitter. If you need more information, feel free to explore this project in greater detail.

ESXi is a popular hypervisor that allows for virtualization and efficient resource allocation. It offers customization and control over networking settings, which could potentially improve network performance if configured correctly. On the other hand, Linode is a cloud hosting provider known for its reliable infrastructure and automated scaling capabilities.

To determine which option is better, you should consider factors such as your specific telephony requirements, the network conditions of each provider, their server configurations, and customer reviews or benchmarks. It may be useful to consult with experienced professionals or conduct tests to measure packet loss, delays, and overall reliability.

There are several hosting providers that offer services specifically tailored for telephony or VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) applications. Here are a few options you can consider:

1. Twilio: Twilio is a well-known cloud communications platform that provides APIs and tools for building telephony applications. It offers services like voice calling, SMS, video, and more.

2. Nexmo (now Vonage API Platform): Nexmo, now part of Vonage API Platform, is another popular cloud communication provider that offers APIs for voice calling, SMS, and verification services.

3. Plivo: Plivo is a cloud-based communications platform that provides APIs for voice and SMS services. It supports features like conference calls, call recording, and number provisioning.

4. Voxbone: Voxbone specializes in providing global SIP trunks and phone numbers for businesses. They offer direct inward dialing (DID) numbers in over 9,000 cities worldwide.

5. Amazon Web Services (AWS): AWS offers a range of telephony services through their Amazon Connect and Amazon Chime offerings. Amazon Connect is a cloud-based contact center solution, while Amazon Chime provides audio conferencing and chat capabilities.
