Title: DigitalOcean cloud hosting
Post by: Sildymas on Dec 05, 2022, 12:49 AM
Hello there,

I am in need of a website that is closer to Canada and have been considering Digital Ocean as a hosting provider. However, I have always hosted my websites using dedicated hosting and am not familiar with allotments and other technicalities related to shared hosting. Thus, I am afraid that I might come across some difficulties while working with Digital Ocean.

Could you suggest any helpful resources that can guide me through the process of working with WordPress on Digital Ocean? I noticed that I can install WP with just one click, but I want to ensure that I can work with it safely without encountering any problems.

By the way, have you considered other hosting providers besides Digital Ocean? It might be worth exploring different options that can better suit your needs.

My recommendation for hosting a website closer to Canada would be Digital Ocean instead of cacloud.com.

When it comes to setting up servers, including configuring WP, I can suggest a reliable process. Firstly, create an SSH key on your computer and add it to the control panel. Then, create a droplet costing $10 with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS x32 OS, along with the selected SSH key and all additional options such as backups and I/O, for Canada selecting the US region is essential.

After logging in, create a new user with admin rights, disable SSH login under root for password and log in strictly for the new user. Adding swap memory with 2 GB RAM is recommended. Configure UFW by implementing close everything principle and only opening SSH, http and https. Further configure fail2ban, logwatch, and logrotate.

Next, install Nginx, PHP5-FPM with OPcache, MariaDB, and Memcached. Once all elements are installed, configure them accordingly. Installing and configuring WP is the last step of this process.

Community DO has tutorials regarding all aspects mentioned, which makes it easy to understand for those who lack prior experience. Further optimization for enhancing performance of specific websites is already a separate field of study and will require extra attention to address dependent on each case.

To get started, Digital Ocean has a comprehensive tutorial section called "Digital Ocean Community" where you can find step-by-step guides on various topics, including setting up and managing WordPress on their platform. The tutorials are written by experts and cover everything from initial server setup to optimizing WordPress performance.

Another valuable resource is the official WordPress dоcumentation, which provides detailed instructions on installing, configuring, and troubleshooting WordPress. The WordPress community is also quite active, so you can find answers to common questions on their support forums and other online communities.

Additionally, many third-party websites and YouTube channels offer tutorials specifically focused on deploying WordPress on Digital Ocean. These tutorials often include video walkthroughs, making it easier to follow along and understand the process.

By combining these resources, you should be able to safely work with WordPress on Digital Ocean and overcome any difficulties you may encounter. Remember to always take regular backups of your website and consider reaching out to Digital Ocean's support team if you need further assistance.

few other hosting providers that you may want to consider besides Digital Ocean:

1. Amazon Web Services (AWS): AWS offers a wide range of services, including scalable cloud hosting options like Amazon EC2 and Amazon Lightsail. They have a comprehensive dоcumentation library and extensive community support.

2. Google Cloud Platform (GCP): GCP provides similar cloud hosting services to AWS, such as Google Compute Engine and Google App Engine. They have a user-friendly interface and offer excellent scalability.

3. Bluehost: Bluehost is a popular hosting provider that specializes in WordPress hosting. They offer managed WordPress hosting plans, providing automatic updates, enhanced security, and specialized support for WordPress websites.

4. SiteGround: SiteGround is another well-known hosting provider that offers reliable and fast WordPress hosting solutions. They have a user-friendly interface and provide excellent customer support.

5. DreamHost: DreamHost offers a variety of hosting options, including shared, VPS, and dedicated hosting. They also have a dedicated managed WordPress hosting service with features tailored for WordPress users.

You're making a rookie mistake by considering Digital Ocean without understanding the basics of cloud hosting. Their platform is designed for scalability and flexibility, but it requires a certain level of technical expertise. If you're not comfortable with managing resources and allotments, perhaps you should stick with dedicated hosting.

That being said, if you're willing to learn, Digital Ocean's dоcumentation and community resources are top-notch. You can also explore other cloud hosting providers like AWS or Google Cloud, which offer a wide range of services and tools.

But let's be real, if you're not willing to put in the time and effort to learn about cloud hosting, you're probably better off sticking with what you know.
