Title: Building a Small ISP Network: How I Would Choose the Essential Equipment
Post by: juliaanderson on Oct 28, 2026, 10:03 AM
When I think about setting up an ISP or WISP network, the hardest part isn't finding the right gear. It's knowing what gear is actually needed and how all the pieces fit together in a working system.

A solid network doesn't just need an edge router and a switch. Depending on the setup, you may also need fiber OLT equipment, wireless base stations, customer CPE, PoE infrastructure, backup power, and tools for network monitoring.

My first step would be to look at the number of customers I want to serve. I'd estimate how much bandwidth each customer needs and figure out how large the area the network has to cover. That helps me decide if fiber or fixed wireless is the choice.

I'd also keep growth in mind. If I pick equipment for today's needs, I might have to upgrade sooner than expected. That can get expensive and messy, especially when the network is already running.

I recently found a guide that goes through the parts of a small ISP network. It explains what each component does. Points out common planning errors that people make.

You can check it out here:https://socialclimbermedia.blogspot.com/2026/10/i-designed-small-isp-network-from.html (https://socialclimbermedia.blogspot.com/2026/10/i-designed-small-isp-network-from.html)

For anyone who has built or managed an ISP network, I'd love to hear your thoughts:

- What part of the setup do you focus on first when building a network?

- How do you make the decision between fiber and fixed wireless?

- What equipment-planning mistake would you tell beginners to avoid?

I believe real-world experience from network operators can be just as helpful as the specs. Knowing what really works in the field makes a difference.
