Title: Dedicated Server for Virtualization Projects?
Post by: Arkanello on Nov 25, 2025, 12:57 AM
Hi everyone, I'm planning to deploy multiple KVM instances for testing and need a dedicated server. Requirements: AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon (8+ cores), 128GB RAM, 2×1.92TB NVMe SSD, and 1Gbps bandwidth (at least 30TB/month). Must allow virtualization (nested if possible) and provide IPMI or full remote control. Looking for stable uptime, good peering, and responsive support — suggestions appreciated! Is Hostingsource.com server host trustworthy one?

If you're planning a dedicated server for virtualization projects (running multiple VMs, containers, development labs, VDI, or private cloud environments), the ideal configuration depends on the workload, but these specifications are a solid starting point:

Recommended Hardware
Component   Recommended Specification
CPU   AMD EPYC 7003/9004 series or Intel Xeon Scalable (16–64+ cores)
RAM   64 GB minimum, 128–512 GB preferred for multiple VMs
Storage   NVMe SSDs in RAID 1 or RAID 10
Network   1 Gbps minimum, 10 Gbps preferred
Virtualization Support   AMD-V or Intel VT-x/VT-d enabled
Backup   Off-site and snapshot-based backups
Popular Virtualization Platforms
Proxmox VE — Open-source, supports KVM and LXC containers.
VMware vSphere — Enterprise-grade virtualization and management.
Microsoft Hyper-V — Suitable for Windows-centric environments.
XCP-ng — Free alternative based on Xen.
CPU Selection Tips
Many small VMs: Prioritize higher core counts (AMD EPYC is often preferred).
Database or application servers: Balance core count with high clock speeds.
Nested virtualization or labs: More RAM is often more important than CPU.
Storage Considerations
Use NVMe SSDs for VM disks.
RAID 10 offers a good balance of performance and redundancy.
Separate storage pools for backups and VM data when possible.
Common Use Cases
Development and testing environments
Private cloud infrastructure
Hosting client websites and applications
Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)
Kubernetes and container clusters
CI/CD build servers
Example Mid-Range Virtualization Server
AMD EPYC 7313P (16 cores / 32 threads)
128 GB ECC RAM
2 × 1.92 TB NVMe SSD (RAID 1)
1 Gbps or 10 Gbps uplink
Proxmox VE

This setup can comfortably run 10–30 moderate-sized virtual machines, depending on workload.

If you share:

Number of VMs
Operating systems (Linux/Windows)
Expected RAM per VM
Budget
Whether this is on-premises or rented hosting

I can recommend a more precise server configuration.

For virtualization projects (such as Proxmox, VMware ESXi, Hyper-V, XCP-ng, or KVM), you should look for a dedicated server with:

Hardware virtualization support (Intel VT-x/VT-d or AMD-V)
At least 64 GB RAM (128 GB+ preferred for multiple VMs)
NVMe SSD storage
IPMI/KVM remote management
Multiple public IPs if you plan to host internet-facing VMs
RAID storage for redundancy

Some good options include:

OVHcloud Dedicated Servers — Strong value, good for Proxmox and VMware deployments.
VM Platform — Offers servers specifically configured for ESXi, Hyper-V, and Proxmox.
CloudTechtiq Dedicated Servers — India-based servers supporting VMware, Hyper-V, and Proxmox.
Cherry Servers Virtualization Servers — Bare-metal servers optimized for virtualization workloads.

For a small lab:

8–16 CPU cores
64 GB RAM
2 × 1 TB NVMe (RAID 1)

For production:

16–32+ cores
128–256 GB RAM
Enterprise NVMe SSDs
IPMI and backup storage

If you tell me:

Which hypervisor you plan to use (Proxmox, ESXi, Hyper-V, etc.),
Your budget per month,
Whether you need the server in India or another region,

A dedicated server is an excellent choice for virtualization projects because it provides full access to hardware resources, allowing multiple virtual machines to run efficiently without resource sharing. It also offers better performance, scalability, and control for managing complex virtual environments.
