Title: Afternic: Thoughts on NS3/NS4 and NS5/NS6?
Post by: aliciasierra on Oct 08, 2023, 01:28 AM
Hello everyone,

I'm interested in updating the DNS for all my domains that are up for sale on Afternic. I'd like to hear your thoughts and experiences regarding Afternic's nameservers, specifically NS3/NS4 and NS5/NS6.

Currently, I have all my domain names listed on Afternic with Buy It Now pricing and Flooring pricing. Some people have recommended NS3/NS4 while others have suggested NS5/NS6.

If anyone has any thoughts, feedback, or personal experiences to share, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you in advance.

Afternic's commonly recommended nameservers include:

NS1.AFTERNIC.COM
NS2.AFTERNIC.COM
Depending on where and how you've purchased or registered your domains, you might also see other Afternic nameservers like:

NS3.AFTERNIC.COM
NS4.AFTERNIC.COM
NS5.AFTERNIC.COM
NS6.AFTERNIC.COM
The specific numbers assigned mention (NS1, NS2, up to NS6) are different versions of DNS servers. The server selection can depend on various technical factors and individual needs. Often, they simply offer redundancy, providing backup in case one server fails.

There could be some difference in the technical infrastructure behind NS3/NS4 and NS5/NS6 in terms of speed, reliability and availability, but generally, as long as your nameservers are properly configured and the domain names resolve correctly, the specific DNS servers you use are less important.

Remember, it's important to ensure that the DNS you set for your domains matches where it is listed as for sale. If you're in doubt about which nameservers to use, it would be best to contact Afternic's support or visit their FAQ and dоcumentation for further help.

If the choice between NS3/NS4 and NS5/NS6 is causing confusion, seeking advice from a domain registration expert or from the Afternic support team directly can result in more clarity and assurance about which one is more suitable for your situation.

The nameservers control the DNS settings for a domain and therefore the domain's routing. While you might find different numbers at the end of Afternic's NS servers (like NS3, NS4, NS5, NS6), their principal function remains largely the same: to direct internet traffic to the appropriate servers using DNS records.

Key types of DNS records include:

A record: This points a hostname to an IPv4 IP address.
AAAA record: This points a hostname to an IPv6 IP address.
CNAME record: This is the canonical name record that makes one domain an alias of another.
MX record: This is responsible for mail exchange and is used to specify a mail server for accepting a mail transmission.
TXT record: A text record typically has human-readable text that provides information to sources outside your organization.
In the context of Afternic, their nameservers likely point your domain name to a page that says the domain is for sale. This increases the chances of selling your domain because anyone who enters the domain into their browser can easily see it's for sale.

The distinctions between Afternic's nameservers (like NS3/NS4 and NS5/NS6) may relate to different infrastructure setups (like location and availability) but as of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, I don't have explicit details on their specific effects on domain name sales.

You might want to consider the following when choosing nameservers:

Reliability: Nameservers are a critical part of keeping your domains accessible. If they aren't reliable, visitors could have trouble accessing your site. This depends on the provider's infrastructure, redundancy measures, and track record.
Performance: Performance might be an indirect consideration, especially for intending buyers trying to reach your domain. Better performing nameservers can provide faster DNS resolution, meaning your sites load quicker.
Support: The support from the provider can be another important factor. The ability to have concerns addressed promptly can be crucial, especially for commercial domains.
At the end of the day, as long as your nameservers are functioning correctly and pointing to the correct place, you're generally unlikely to see a major impact on your domain sales between these two sets from Afternic.
