Hey there! I'm currently facing a dilemma in selecting a domain name for my website that focuses on teaching English. While the ".ru" domain is suitable for my site based on geolocation, I want to ensure that English is prominent throughout the entire site. Therefore, I am torn between choosing ".ru" or going for something like ".com/.org". Do you think it's more appropriate to select a domain based on geolocation or the purpose of the site?

While geolocation can be useful, I recommend opting for a domain like ".school" or ".academy" instead if you are running an educational institution, such as a language learning school. In terms of choosing between ".ru" and ".com/.org", I would personally lean towards ".com".

If the geolocation of the domain is in Russia and the main base of students will also be from Russia, then, as for me, it makes no sense for you to set the .com zone. Of course, if you will attract people from other GEOs, then it is better to choose the .com zone, which is more tolerant of residents of countries other than Russia.

I choose the .com domain zone for any of my sites
It doesn't matter if it's learning English, or an oil rig portal. There is nothing better than the .com domain zone.

The decision between a ".ru" domain and a ".com/.org" domain for a website focused on teaching English involves a careful balance between geolocation and the global nature of English education.

When considering the use of a ".ru" domain, it's essential to recognize the potential benefits for establishing a strong local presence within the Russian-speaking community. This can help build trust and credibility with your audience, as they are more likely to identify with a website that has a domain extension specific to their country. In addition, a ".ru" domain can enhance your visibility in local search results and demonstrate your commitment to serving the needs of Russian learners of English.

On the other hand, opting for a ".com" or ".org" domain can offer distinct advantages in terms of global reach and international recognition. These domain extensions are widely associated with content that transcends geographical boundaries and can signal to visitors from around the world that your website is an inclusive resource for English language education. This choice may be particularly beneficial if you are targeting an international audience or seeking to position your website as a leading authority in English teaching on a global scale.

In making this decision, it's crucial to align your choice of domain with your overall branding and marketing strategy. Consider the message you want to convey through your domain name and the impact it will have on your website's perceived identity. Additionally, you may want to explore the option of securing both a ".ru" domain and a ".com" or ".org" domain to cover both local and international audiences, redirecting one to the primary domain to ensure a seamless user experience for visitors from all geographic locations.
