Title: Growth Continues: 8.7 Million More Domain Name Registrations in 2022

In the fourth quarter of 2022, VeriSign, Inc. reported a total of 350.4 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs), marking a slight increase of 0.5 million registrations, or 0.1%, compared to the third quarter of the same year. Over the course of the year, there has been a growth of 8.7 million registrations, or 2.6%.

The combined number of domain name registrations in the .com and .net TLDs stood at 173.8 million by the end of the fourth quarter of 2022, showing a decrease of 0.4 million registrations, or 0.2%, compared to the previous quarter. However, in a year-on-year comparison, there was an overall increase of 0.3 million registrations, or 0.2%. Specifically, the .com domain base had 160.5 million registrations, while the .net domain base had 13.2 million registrations as of December 31, 2022.

During the same period, new .com and .net domain name registrations amounted to 9.7 million, in contrast to the 10.6 million registrations seen in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The total count of country-code TLD (ccTLD) domain name registrations reached 133.1 million by the end of the fourth quarter of 2022, indicating an increase of 0.7 million registrations, or 0.5%, from the previous quarter. Year over year, ccTLDs experienced a rise of 5.7 million registrations, or 4.5%. The top 10 ccTLDs as of December 31, 2022, included .cn, .de, .uk, .nl, .ru, .br, .au, .eu, .fr, and .it.

Lastly, new generic TLD (ngTLD) domain name registrations totaled 27.4 million at the close of the fourth quarter of 2022, showing a modest increase of 0.1 million registrations, or 0.5%, compared to the previous quarter. Within a year, ngTLDs witnessed a substantial growth of 2.7 million registrations, or 11.1%.

Overall, these numbers demonstrate the continuous expansion of the domain name industry, with various TLDs experiencing varying levels of growth. The internet remains a thriving ecosystem of digital identities and online presence.
