OpenAi is reportedly crаcking down on the use of its generative pretrained transformer (GPT) brand.

This comes after a developer shared a message from Brand Shield, representing OpenAi, stating that GPT cannot be used in product names. According to updated brand terms by OpenAi, their Marks - including names, logos and design elements - are owned by the company and any goodwill generated by their use benefits them.
Permission to use their Marks is granted but limited to following their guidelines, and can be reviewed and terminated at any time. Projects using the GPT-4 or ChatGPT API can state they are "Powered by GPT-4" or "Powered by ChatGPT API" respectively, but cannot use model names in app titles.
OpenAI's strict policy against using the GPT brand in product names is part of their effort to prevent the improper use of their technology. This policy is primarily designed to protect users from potential misinformation or misrepresentation. OpenAI wants to avoid situations where users may mistakenly attribute content to the original intentions of the AI system or fail to recognize that the content is being generated by AI. This policy also helps to maintain the integrity and reputation of OpenAI's language models.
OpenAI recognizes that developers and businesses may want to build products and services using their technology, which is why they do allow organizations to reference "powered by OpenAI's GPT" or similar language to acknowledge the use of the technology. However, OpenAI discourages using names that might imply ownership or endorsement by OpenAI, as it goes against their commitment to transparency and responsible AI use.
OpenAI's policy against using the GPT brand in product names is based on their commitment to transparency, responsible use, and avoiding potential confusion among users. By establishing this policy, OpenAI aims to prevent any misleading or false impressions about the nature of the AI-generated content.
This means that developers and businesses are discouraged from using names that incorporate "GPT" or suggest an official association with OpenAI. OpenAI wants to ensure that users understand when they are interacting with AI-generated content and are not misled into believing that the content has been directly created or endorsed by OpenAI.
OpenAI does, however, allow organizations to refer to their technology as "powered by OpenAI's GPT" or similar language to acknowledge the use of the technology. This approach allows for transparency while maintaining an appropriate distinction between the technology provider (OpenAI) and the developers or businesses building upon it.
