Title: Looking for a valuable Twitter handle? Try Tweexchange
Post by: Domaining News on Jan 12, 2023, 02:38 AM
Elon Musk shares the view of many people in the domaining industry, including myself, that Twitter handles, especially the good ones, are worth money. As far back as 2009, Mike wrote about Twitter handles becoming as valuable as domains.

Despite Twitter's rules against selling handles, a new service called Tweexchange launched, allowing members to buy, exchange, or find Twitter usernames from existing members. The service also suggests alternative usernames and enables communication between potential buyers and sellers. So far, Twitter has been unclear on enforcing its rule against selling handles. Recently, some Twitter names have exchanged hands for significant amounts, like betmoney for $500,000.00. There is no doubt that a market exists for social media handles, as evidenced by Telegram's announcement that it will auction usernames for individual accounts and channels through a marketplace built on the TON blockchain.

Twitter itself is exploring the idea of selling user names to generate revenue, with rumors of online auctions for certain user names such as those of famous people, brands, and popular names. Elon Musk's efforts to increase Twitter's revenue may open the doors to legitimate secondary exchanges, despite Twitter's resistance to the idea of selling handles.

The paid verification token feature has been launched by Twitter, although it is currently being tested and only available to users in the USA, UK, Canada, and Ghana. As of now, there is no specific launch date for the feature becoming available to everyone. Elon Musk also hinted that content monetization would also be feasible.

The Verge reports that this new feature will allow iPhone users located in the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand to get verified on Twitter for a monthly subscription fee of $7.99.

The intersection of social media and digital asset valuation presents both challenges and opportunities for individuals and businesses alike.
The emergence of platforms such as Tweexchange signals a shift in the perception of Twitter handles from mere identifiers to tradable commodities. This has implications for branding and identity management on social media platforms, as well as for the development of strategies to leverage this new market dynamic.

The growing interest in Twitter handles as valuable digital properties underscores the need to consider holistic online brand management. It's no longer just about creating visually appealing websites; it's about understanding the broader digital landscape and the potential value of every aspect of a brand's online presence.

I see the rise of secondary exchanges for Twitter usernames as an intriguing technological challenge. How can we ensure the security and integrity of these transactions? How might blockchain technology be leveraged to provide transparency and trust in these exchanges? These are questions that demand innovative solutions and a deep understanding of both social media dynamics and blockchain technology.

The monetization of Twitter handles raises questions about valuation, investment, and risk management in the digital domain. The concept of online auctions for sought-after usernames introduces a new dimension to the broader market of digital assets and intellectual property.
The evolving landscape of Twitter handles as valuable entities prompts us to reconsider conventional notions of digital property and to explore the complexities of managing and trading assets in the digital sphere. It's a paradigm shift that demands interdisciplinary collaboration and creative thinking across various fields, from technology and finance to branding and communication.
