Title: If I buy a domain name from parking, does it belong to me?
Post by: mickyrobert on Dec 23, 2022, 09:17 AM
If I purchase a domain name from a parking lot, will it be considered as my property or just a rental? Can I sell it in the future or have the right to use it for a decade by making a one-time payment?

The .com domain zone administrator offers a lease term of 1 to 9 years for registered addresses. Finding an available and attractive domain in this zone can be challenging due to high demand. As a result, some tenants opt to sell their occupied domains, often through a "parking lot" service.

By purchasing a domain from a tenant, you are paying only for the assignment of the lease agreement, essentially renting the address from a more successful domain. However, it's important to note that you must still pay the rental fees to the landlord on time. As a tenant, you have the option to resell or assign the domain to another tenant, but finding someone willing to buy it is not guaranteed. It's crucial to understand the regulations and obligations before entering any domain leasing agreements.

The domain name has already been purchased by someone, resembling an item being sold at a flea market. Further information on the topic of buying occupied domains can be found through a search for "cybersquatting".

To obtain the domain name, one can purchase a transfer key for $300 and add it to their registrar's dashboard, then renew it following the registrar's regulations. Another option is to register with the same registrar, and have the domain transferred from one office to another.

Renewal fees vary each year and typically increase slightly, but one can extend registration for up to 9 years at once for peace of mind. A reasonable price for extending .com domains is $10, with an average price around $15. If the domain is not renewed, it will become available for registration by anyone after approximately 40 days. It's essential to keep these factors in mind when considering purchasing or renting a domain.

When you purchase a domain name, you typically own the rights to use that domain for a certain period of time, usually ranging from one to ten years. It is considered your property during that time, and you have the right to use it as you wish, including selling it in the future if you choose.

However, please note that the specific terms and conditions of domain ownership can vary depending on the registrar and the contract you enter into. It is important to carefully review any agreements before making a purchase to understand the specific rights and limitations associated with the domain name.
