Title: How to get domain
Post by: jacoblin on Jan 31, 2023, 10:33 AM
As a beginner sysadmin, I only have a basic understanding of commands such as ls, cd, rm, mkdir and others. Currently, I have an IP address, specifically 66.66.66.56.

Can you provide guidance on how to obtain a domain name, say example666.org and what do I need to purchase for it? Please suggest a cost-effective solution.

Select a domain name registrar, select a domain, and make payment. It is frequently recommended to opt for an overseas registrar as the cost is almost equivalent; however, there is a lower possibility of losing the domain.

When you choose a domain, ensure that you look at the renewal price in addition to the initial year's price. Some providers may offer the initial year cheaply or free of cost, but the extension may turn out to be quite expensive. This cycle continues every year, so it's essential to choose wisely.

Domain names are leased for one year, and then the lease agreement is either renewed, or if not, the domain name will be lost. Domain names are leased from domain registrars, of which there are millions, and not all of them operate with integrity. There are numerous stories online about registrars acting dishonestly. During the first year, a registrar may offer a domain name for free or at a nominal cost, but the renewal price could come as an unwelcome shock. It's important to research and choose a reliable registrar before leasing a domain name.

The first step is to find a domain registrar that offers registration for the desired domain name, in your case, example666.org. I recommend researching reputable domain registrars to ensure reliability and good customer service.
Once you've selected a domain registrar, you can proceed with searching for the availability of the domain name. If it's available, you can add it to your cart and proceed to checkout. If the domain is already taken, you may want to consider variations or different top-level domains (.com, .net, .info, etc.).

In addition to the domain registration, you may want to consider purchasing domain privacy protection to keep your personal information private and secure. This is especially important for individuals who are just starting out and may not have dedicated business contact information.

As for cost-effective solutions, some domain registrars offer bundled packages that include domain registration, privacy protection, and even web hosting services at a discounted price. It's essential to compare the pricing and features offered by different registrars to find the most cost-effective solution that meets your needs.
