Title: Why experience is sometimes ineffective
Post by: KelpyMson on Sep 26, 2022, 11:00 AM
To warm up, I propose answering three questions. Firstly, why do you come to the forum? Secondly, when familiarising yourself with an unfamiliar item, such as a washing machine, do you read the instructions from start to finish or just wing it? Lastly, imagine if you never learned multiplication tables in school, would that hinder your ability to comprehend later math (like algebra)?

I recently stumbled upon a TV program called "On Knives" where a seasoned restaurateur visits failing restaurants in different cities by invitation. He evaluates dishes on their menu, notes their quality and observes the establishment's day-to-day operations. Most restaurant owners are not prepared to change the style or concept of their establishment, even when faced with failure. The majority of these owners lack education or experience in running a successful restaurant, but remain committed to opening a prosperous establishment. This program highlighted the importance of learning, evolving and changing, particularly for those seeking success.

The world is experiencing an "information distribution" era, whereby individuals must learn to filter necessary data to adapt to real-life and online changes. Panic can set in when one falls behind and becomes outdated. It is crucial to accumulate experience and to embrace learning as a student, regardless of your level of expertise.

To excel in the field of hosting and domaining, it is important to continuously pursue knowledge, as it is impossible to experiment in all areas simultaneously. As a modern domainer, I have delved deep into my company and have participated in various activities such as listening to conversations at the contact center, observing sellers and attending their training, using CMS and call tracking, setting up advertising campaigns, and supporting social groups. Additionally, as a respected guest, I am frequently invited to seminars hosted by IT companies in my city, and attend them when appropriate. Despite my experience, there is still much to learn, and it is impossible to retain every detail and fact.

Your points about continuous learning and adaptability are spot on. In today's dynamic world staying updated and evolving is crucial whether it's in technology or running a business. The TV program you mentioned prioritizes that success often requires stepping outside comfort zones and embracing new knowledge and approaches.

Experience can be useless if it breeds complacency or antiquated ideas. Relying too heavily on prior achievements could hinder the ability to adjust to new situations. Quick changes in the market or in technology can make past knowledge less applicable. Maintaining the value and applicability of experience requires constant learning and receptivity to new concepts.

Experience can be useless if it breeds arrogance or a dependence on antiquated techniques. The world changes, and new problems frequently call for novel ideas or creative solutions. Rigidly adhering to prior achievements could impede critical thinking, learning, and flexibility. Better problem-solving and development are fostered by striking a balance between experience and adaptability.

Experience can be useless if it is out of date, misused, or breeds complacency. Industries change, and success can be hampered by sticking to outdated strategies without making any adjustments. Experience can also produce prejudices that impede new insights. Experience that works blends education, adaptability, and receptivity to new concepts instead of strictly adhering to previous methods.

Taking the mindset of a student can reveal why experience sometimes falls short: seasoned individuals may unconsciously overestimate how much novices understand, a phenomenon known as the curse of knowledge. This expertise bias makes it hard for experts to teach or design learning that truly meets learners where they are. As a result, experience alone may be ineffective if it isn't paired with reflection, empathy, and awareness of learners' actual knowledge levels.
