Title: Can anyone provide domain binding on a free hosting platform?
Post by: uzldiva on Aug 22, 2023, 06:47 AM
In fact, I only require approximately 350mb of server space for a personal business card website. I'd rather not spend money on hosting since I don't need much at all - everything is static, php usage is minimal, and the expected traffic is also very low.

Having a base isn't really necessary, but it wouldn't hurt to have one either.

I've tried various free hosting services like 110mb, but they only allow domain linking through their own DNS. My personal email is hosted on Google Apps with my own DNS, which I've paid for in advance for a year. I haven't come across any free hosting service that allows A-record binding for a custom domain.

Perhaps someone can offer some assistance? If absolutely necessary, I am willing to contribute financially on a regular basis, even if it's just a small amount.

Firstly, you might consider using GitHub Pages to host your static website for free. It supports custom domains and offers up to 1GB of free storage.

Another option is Netlify, which provides free hosting for static websites with custom domain support. It also offers features like continuous deployment and form handling.

If you prefer a more traditional hosting service, you could explore providers like InfinityFree or 000webhost. While they offer free hosting plans, they may have some limitations in terms of storage and bandwidth.

If you're open to contributing financially on a regular basis, you could consider using services like AWS S3 and AWS CloudFront. These services provide scalable and reliable static website hosting with pay-as-you-go pricing.

Here are a few more options for hosting your personal business card website:

1. Heroku: While primarily known for hosting dynamic web applications, Heroku also supports static website hosting. It offers a free tier with 550-1,000 dyno hours per month, which should be sufficient for low-traffic websites.

2. Vercel (formerly known as Zeit Now): Vercel provides free hosting for static websites with custom domain support. It offers a simple and powerful platform for deploying and managing static sites.

3. Firebase Hosting: Firebase Hosting is a popular choice for hosting static websites. It offers free hosting with fast global content delivery and easy deployment. It also integrates well with other Firebase services if you require additional functionality.

4. Neocities: Neocities is a community-driven hosting platform specifically designed for static websites. It offers free hosting with generous storage and bandwidth limits. It also provides a simple editor for building and managing your website.

options for hosting your personal business card website:

1. GitLab Pages: GitLab offers free static website hosting through its Pages feature. It allows you to host your website from a GitLab repository and supports custom domains.

2. Surge: Surge is a straightforward static web publishing tool that provides free hosting for single-page applications or static websites. It supports custom domains and has an easy-to-use command-line interface for deployment.

3. GitHub Repository with GitHub Actions: You can host your static website on a GitHub repository and leverage GitHub Actions to automatically deploy it. This allows you to use custom domains using GitHub Pages.

4. AWS Amplify: AWS Amplify provides a comprehensive set of tools and services for building and deploying static websites. It offers a free tier that includes hosting, continuous deployment, and custom domain support.

I'm not sure why GAE isn't appropriate. It handles statics flawlessly, while also providing its own python and java engine, along with its proprietary dоcument-oriented database infused with SQL flavors.
However, there seem to be issues concerning SSL and second-level domains. If I comprehend correctly, having a domain.com is unattainable, but you can have www.domain.com.

I think GAE is an excellent platform for hosting websites and applications. Its versatile features, like the built-in python and java engines, make it convenient for developers to deploy and manage their projects. Moreover, the dоcument-oriented database with SQL seasoning adds flexibility in handling data storage. Nonetheless, the limitation with SSL and second-level domains may pose challenges for certain use cases.

There is an option to connect the domain to a free DNS service, which will then redirect to your website hosted on a free hosting platform.
Additionally, there is another technique that allows for the preservation of the original URL in the browser's address bar, although I cannot recall its specific name. I implemented this method for my own website six years ago.

While many free hosts restrict DNS configurations, consider using services like Netlify or Vercel. They offer free tiers that support custom domains and allow A-record binding. These platforms are optimized for static content, making them perfect for your business card site.
If you find yourself needing more features down the line, their upgrade paths are reasonable.
