Title: How I haven't found a hosting provider
Post by: RickyChhajed on Dec 19, 2022, 03:28 AM
Initially, I began working as an IT specialist at a state-run enterprise. The pay is very low, at around $150 per month, which is the legal minimum wage. Unfortunately, being a student means that I am unable to expect any significant increase in income. I have previously worked in my field for almost a year in civil service, earning about $200 per month, but there are no opportunities for career advancement.

However, the state enterprise is currently undergoing significant changes, such as restructuring, acquisitions, and even changing its legal address. Due to this, I was asked to create a simple website for the company that would be of a business card level. Although I initially thought it was a trivial task, I quickly discovered it was not.

Registering the domain and hosting turned out to be quite challenging, and I struggled to find a suitable company to work with. Additionally, as my salary before taxes is only $150, payment of the site and domain would come from my pocket, leaving me with a strong desire to save as much as possible.

It was also challenging to find reasonable hosting rates, as certain providers either did not offer free SSL or basic DDoS protection. Some providers also show prices when paying for a year, disguising the actual monthly payment amount.

I encountered issues with payment, as they required payment through Visa/MasterCard/Mir bank cards, which are not available in my area. Unfortunately, I only receive cash for my salary and have no access to a proper bank.

Although I attempted to use WebMoney, the commission was too high, and it was challenging to replenish the account. I considered driving somewhere else to obtain a payment card, but this was also too expense.

Previously, I could enter fake data and not worry about the consequences. However, now I must transfer the domain to others and cannot afford to lose it. Some hosting providers offered partnership programs, which would allow me to earn a percentage of the profits for every customer I attract. As a state-owned enterprise, I saw this as an opportunity to recover some of my expenses, especially if I plan to create websites for others in the future.

Unfortunately, I discovered that citizenship is required to become a partner, and I struggled to fill out the necessary paperwork due to my living situation. Despite these difficulties, I appreciate the quality of service provided by certain hosting companies, despite the challenges I encountered.

Your professional skills are impressive, especially considering your current struggles in real life. It almost seems like a nerdy meme. Some of your misconceptions are too much for me to address, but if half of what you've said about yourself is true, I would hire you immediately for a remote part-time job at 500 euros per month.

Your strong background in applied computer science from a top university is impressive, especially if you received a minimum of a 4 in your courses. Practical experience in teamwork and knowledge of team tools is crucial for serious offices, which means that only junior positions may be available at this point.

Freelancing may be a better option for gaining practical experience, especially given your circumstances. Even simple tasks like installing and configuring a WordPress site could earn you $200 in the first month, with the potential to build a portfolio and gain more significant experience through freelancing.

Working for a state office without practical experience would be a waste of time, and it may not mean anything in terms of career growth. Therefore, continuing university studies and exploring freelance opportunities may be your best bet for success.

It's amazing how much energy you seem to have, especially with managing your law studies and learning about various topics. However, I am confused by some contradictions in your plans. In one post, you mention focusing on web-related activities, while in another post, you dream of creating a book about the pros.

I'm not sure if you're a genius or if there is more to your daily life that I don't know about. I don't want to offend, but I am curious about your upbringing, education, nutrition, and lifestyle. More details about your daily life would help me understand how you are able to achieve so much.

Although I'm not familiar with IIS7 or Plesk, I have a question about mochahost. Is it possible for me to create a wildcard application map on my own, where all requests are processed through aspnet_isapi.dll? Or will I need support to make this happen?

It's important to note that making changes to servers and hosting can be complex, and it's crucial to have an understanding of the required tools and resources before making any changes. Seeking support from experienced professionals may be the best option to ensure that changes are implemented correctly and effectively.

I can completely relate to the challenges you've faced with setting up a website for the state-run enterprise. It's not just about creating a "business card level" website, but the logistics and financial considerations that come with it.
When it comes to domain registration and hosting, it's crucial to find reliable and affordable providers. I understand the struggle of finding a suitable company that offers the necessary features like SSL and DDoS protection while also being transparent about their pricing structure. It can be frustrating to encounter providers who only show yearly prices, making it difficult to budget on a monthly basis.

I also empathize with the payment issues you've encountered. Payment methods can be a significant hurdle, especially when dealing with international transactions and limited banking options in your area. The high commission fees and the challenge of replenishing WebMoney account certainly add another layer of complexity.

The idea of partnership programs to recover some of the expenses is a smart approach, and I see the potential for earning through customer referrals. However, the requirement of citizenship for becoming a partner can be a major roadblock, especially given your living situation.

It's encouraging to hear that despite the difficulties, you've found hosting companies that provide quality service. This resilience and appreciation for the quality of service will serve you well as you continue to navigate the challenges of website development and maintenance.

In your position, I would recommend exploring alternative payment methods and perhaps seeking out local resources or assistance to overcome the obstacles you've encountered. Building a support network within the web development community or seeking advice from experienced professionals could also provide valuable insights and solutions to the challenges you're facing.

The experience you've had is a testament to the inefficiencies in the current web hosting landscape. The struggle with domain registration and payment options is frankly ridiculous. Why are we still dealing with outdated payment systems? The barriers to entry for partnership programs are not just inconvenient; they actively discourage innovation. The state enterprise needs to reevaluate its approach to technology and support its employees better.
