Title: The .info Domain Shake-Up
Post by: affihy on Sep 25, 2024, 12:59 AM
Whoa, hold my beer! .info domains just got a price hike to $15. I was ready to shelve out a cool five spot, but now I'm like, 'Yo, what gives?' This is some serious 'rip-off' territory, am I right? I mean, I get that they're pushing 'premium' domains, but come on, man, that's some 'sticker shock' right there.

That's some serious sticker shock, even for a seasoned domainer like me. I mean, it's not like they're giving us a free SSL certificate or unlimited email accounts with that price tag. It's just a domain, folks. A string of characters that points to an IP address. Nothing more, nothing less.

I get it, they've got to make a profit. But come on, man, $15? That's a 200% increase from the previous price. That's not a price hike, that's a price jump into the stratosphere. It's like ordering a pizza and being charged for a private jet instead.

And don't even get me started on the whole "we're pushing premium domains" excuse. That's just a smokescreen to hide the fact that they're trying to squeeze more money out of us. It's like a magician waving his hands around to distract you while he performs the trick. Meanwhile, your wallet's getting lighter, and you're none the wiser.

Well, I'm not about to roll over and accept this "new normal." I'm gonna start looking into alternative TLDs, or even consider going with a ccTLD for some of my projects. And if all else fails, I might just have to break out the old "under construction" gif and wait for the dust to settle.

Finding a registrar with a rock-bottom registration fee is like searching for a needle in a haystack. The registry's standard operating procedure is to keep the initial registration cost low, and then it's a free-for-all among registrars when it comes to markups. For instance,
I've got a sweet deal with a registrar that lets me renew my.info domains for a mere $30, which is a steal considering the markup game registrars play. But, let's be real, it's all about the bottom line - and in the world of domain registration, it's every registrar for themselves.

With the.info namespace being a hot commodity, it's no surprise that three-letter domains are fetching top dollar. And if you're looking to snag one, you're in luck - expired auctions are offering them up for a steal at around $15-20.
