How One Small Code Error Turned Me into a Bot-Spamming Pariah

For a significant amount of time, I have been working on web development and creating telegram bots, using a domestic hosting service that starts with 'hos' and ends with 'tia' for over ten years. Their price/quality ratio suited my needs perfectly and I have had no complaints for all these years, except for the loss of data due to a fire at the data center. However, a recent incident changed my perspective.

Many clients who order bots require the ability to send mailings to their users, such as newsletters or information intended for a specific group of payers. The bot itself cannot initiate a dialogue with a user until they launch the bot. Therefore, the user agrees to receive messages by pressing the START button. Over the years, I have created multiple bots with the ability to send mailings, and I advised my clients to use the same hosting service that I have been using. Many bots have been sending thousands of messages to their subscribers for years without any issues.

Recently, I ran a script with an infinite loop due to a small error in the code. In order to stop this process and fix the issue, I contacted the support chat, and they informed me that spamming is not allowed. They offered to either delete the script or block my account. Even after explaining that bots cannot send spam as users subscribe voluntarily, and sometimes pay for the delivery of these messages, they still did not understand. I assumed that the support chat employee was not particularly intelligent and did not comprehend the issue.

Later, a client complained that the bot stopped responding. Upon checking, I discovered that my account was blocked, and all attempts to resolve the issue failed to reach common sense. This led me to conclude that I need to get a VPS and become my own host to transport my clients. It's incredible how a single incident caused me to become categorized as a spammer, and I realized that it is necessary to have a more reliable hosting service.

Have you ever spent a decade using a hosting service that requires contacting support to stop a task? While it may be an interesting experience, why subject yourself to such unnecessary difficulties?

It's baffling that VPS wasn't your first choice, considering its convenience and the fact that the rules are the same. Additionally, you risk being banned for endless cycles, which highlights the importance of having a strong foundation in programming before moving onto more complex tasks.

Creating a separate process or table is necessary when dealing with bot tasks, as it allows for better organization and tracking of results. Transferring data from a temporary to a permanent table also ensures data is stored effectively and accessible in the long-term.

Ultimately, it's important to understand the basics when entrusting tasks to technology, regardless of one's level of expertise. This ensures that tasks are completed efficiently and without unnecessary roadblocks.

For those who are not professionals and are starting their own business for the first time, the chances of burning out and losing their invested funds are extremely high. This is particularly true when dealing with large-scale investments, such as renting or buying an office space and recruiting numerous staff members. Unfortunately, many people neglect the importance of proper market research and a solid business plan in the initial stages of their business.

While there are individuals who have succeeded through slow and steady growth, they often have a deep passion and commitment to their work. These individuals are often considered fanatics, as they devote a significant portion of their lives to their business venture.

It's important to note that passion alone is not enough to guarantee success in business. Proper research, planning, and investment are necessary for long-term growth and stability.

Finding a reliable hosting service is crucial for the smooth operation of your bots and for maintaining good relationships with your clients. It's unfortunate that a single incident caused your account to be blocked and led you to question the reliability of the hosting service you were using. Moving forward, it might be beneficial to research and compare different hosting providers to ensure they meet your specific needs and requirements.

By taking control of your hosting through a VPS, you can have more flexibility and independence in managing your bots and client subscriptions. It gives you the ability to have full control over your infrastructure and mitigate potential issues more effectively.

things to consider when looking for a reliable hosting service:

1. Reliability and Uptime: Look for a hosting provider with a strong track record of high server uptime. Downtime can lead to disruptions in your services and affect your clients' experience.

2. Scalability: Consider whether the hosting service can accommodate the growth of your business and the increasing demands of your clients. Ensure that they offer flexible plans that allow you to easily scale your resources as needed.

3. Security Measures: Pay attention to the security measures implemented by the hosting provider. This includes measures like firewalls, regular backups, SSL certificates, and DDoS protection. These measures will help protect your data and ensure the safety of your clients' information.

4. Support and Customer Service: Evaluate the level of support provided by the hosting service. Choose a provider that offers prompt and knowledgeable customer support to assist you in case of any issues or emergencies.

5. Pricing and Value: Compare the pricing structures of different hosting providers and evaluate the value they offer in terms of features, resources, and support. Be cautious of extremely low-cost options that might compromise on quality and reliability.

6. User Reviews and Recommendations: Read reviews and seek recommendations from other developers or businesses in similar industries. Their experiences and insights can provide valuable guidance in choosing a hosting service.

The incident you faced highlights a critical issue in the industry: the lack of understanding of legitimate use cases for automated messaging. Your clients rely on these bots for essential updates, and being labeled a "spammer" due to a script error is not just unfair, it reflects poorly on the hosting service's support structure.
Moving to a VPS is a wise decision, as it offers you greater control and flexibility to manage your resources without the fear of arbitrary shutdowns.
