Pitfalls of domain names. Why not use subdomains instead of buying new domains?

Hello!

I am considering creating new websites and I am wondering whether to use subdomains instead of purchasing new domains. In the past, I have had success with free hosting sites that were indexed by search engines, despite being third-level domains. Currently, many hosting services allow users to create third-level domains for free, which function as complete new sites.

Is there any reason I should still purchase new domains, or is there something I am missing? Any advice from experienced webmasters would be appreciated. Note, these projects are not intended for sale.

1. It is not possible to sell a third-level domain.
2. The number of databases may be limited unless a dedicated server is used.
3. When using subdomains, it is not possible to relink domains on the same IP.
4. This approach is useful for creating interconnected websites, such as having each domain represent a different region or section of a large portal.
5. There may be insufficient server or hosting space for all files.

Apart from these considerations, using a subdomain does not differ from using a regular domain. Some SEO companies create a large number of main pages by generating high-frequency keywords, with each page using a separate subdomain.

I would recommend purchasing separate domains for your new websites instead of using subdomains or third-level domains. Here's my reasoning:

1. Branding and Authority: A unique domain name creates a stronger brand identity and perceived authority for your website. It's easier for visitors to remember and associate with your content or services. Subdomains or third-level domains can often appear less professional and authoritative.

2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO): While it's possible for subdomains and third-level domains to be indexed by search engines, they generally carry less weight and authority than top-level domains. Search engines tend to favor and rank well-established, unique domains higher, which can result in better visibility and organic traffic.

3. Flexibility and Control: Owning your domain gives you complete control over its management, configuration, and future use. With subdomains or third-level domains, you may be limited by the hosting provider's policies and restrictions, which could potentially constrain your website's growth or future plans.

4. Portability and Transferability: If you ever decide to move your website to a different hosting provider or sell it in the future, transferring a unique domain is typically easier and more straightforward than dealing with subdomains or third-level domains.

5. Scalability and Expansion: As your online presence grows, you may want to expand with additional websites or services. Having separate domains allows for clear separation and organization, making it easier to manage and promote each entity distinctly.

6. Professionalism and Credibility: While not a hard rule, having a unique domain often conveys a more professional and credible image, especially for businesses or personal brands. It can instill trust and confidence in your visitors and potential customers.

That being said, if your projects are purely experimental or temporary, and you don't have immediate plans for monetization or long-term growth, using subdomains or third-level domains could be a cost-effective solution initially. However, as your websites gain traction and you start considering long-term goals, it's generally advisable to transition to unique domains.

They're free and get indexed, but they scream "cheap" and dilute your main domain's authority. You're basically leeching off your primary domain's SEO clout without building standalone equity.

New domains, even budget .xyz or .co, give you a fresh slate to dominate a niche and avoid the subdomain stigma. Don't skimp on this, it's like building a house on rented land.
