Game server Windows or Linux?

Hey there,

I'm currently in search of either a dedicated server or multiple VPS to host a game server for my group. My only concern is which operating system to go with - Linux or Windows?

While I haven't had any experience with Windows servers before, I do want to use some games that are specifically designed for the Windows OS. Thus, I'm facing a bit of a dilemma.

On another note, I'm hoping that the company I choose to go with has a TCAdmin or some other control panel available. This would make it much easier for me and other clan admins to manage the server.

Thanks in advance.

When it comes to gaming on a Windows computer, the operating system doesn't necessarily dictate the backend. Depending on the game and its requirements, a non-Windows backend may be possible.

That being said, if you have access to games supported by a Linux server, it's highly recommended to use it for better performance. In fact, you can expect to have 100% performance when playing games on a Linux server.

To make an informed decision about which backend to use, it's important to read up on the options available for the games you want to play. This can help you optimize your gaming experience and ensure you get the best performance possible.

As technology advances, it's exciting to see the growing possibilities for customization and flexibility when it comes to gaming. The ability to choose different backends depending on the game's requirements allows for a more tailored and optimized experience. However, it's important to do your research to ensure you're getting the most out of your gaming setup.

On my FreeBSD system, I have several games including CS, HL, CSS, Quake2, Quake 3, PvPGN, and NFS_U. Additionally, I also have GTA and Unreal Tournament installed.

Although it is currently not possible to upgrade the vehicle in the game, it functions well enough for my needs. I am not entirely certain about the specifications of my car, but I believe that it has a memory of 4G and is not a PIII.

Admittedly, the server is not particularly busy and is primarily used for playing CS, with infrequent use of other games.

Let's break down your concerns:

1. Operating System: Since you want to host games designed specifically for Windows OS, and you don't have experience with Windows servers, it might be beneficial to go with a Windows-based server. This will ensure compatibility and ease of use with the games you intend to host.

2. Control Panel: It's great that you're looking for a control panel like TCAdmin to simplify server management. When selecting a hosting provider, ensure that they offer a control panel that meets your needs and supports the operating system you choose.

When choosing between a dedicated server or multiple VPS, consider factors such as performance requirements, scalability, and budget. Dedicated servers provide more resources and power, while VPS can offer greater flexibility and cost-effectiveness.

Overall, I recommend researching hosting providers that offer both Windows-based servers and a suitable control panel. Look for reviews and consider reaching out to their support teams to discuss your specific needs before making a decision.

Windows is a bloated mess for game servers - sure, it runs your niche games, but the overhead and constant patching are a total PITA. Linux is the real deal for pros who know their stuff, it's lean, mean, and doesn't nickel-and-dime you with licenses.

You're clueless about Windows servers? Good luck with that dumpster fire of a learning curve. TCAdmin is nice for noobs, but if your host doesn't offer it, you're stuck babysitting configs manually.
