How Do You Know When a Growing Network Needs a Larger Switch?

As a business network grows, adding devices does not always mean that the existing switch needs to be replaced right away.

I believe it is important to look at the total capacity of the switch. Port count is a factor, but other things like uplink speed, current traffic levels, PoE demand, VLAN support, and the types of devices being connected can also impact performance.

For example, a switch might still have ports, but its uplink could become overloaded when more access points, cameras, servers, or other high-traffic devices are added. That's when even a fine switch starts to struggle.

Before deciding to upgrade, I would check the network closely. Looking at interface utilization, packet errors, and dropped packets. Uplink traffic helps determine if the hardware is actually slowing things down. Sometimes the switch is working fine—other problems may be causing issues.

Future growth matters too. If you expect users or devices in the coming years, choosing a switch with some extra headroom can save you from having to replace it again soon.
