Title: Reflection on Programming and Passion
Post by: uTracevv on Nov 02, 2023, 07:09 AM
Hello, colleagues!

More and more frequently, I find myself realizing that I am not prepared to write code for the rest of my life. This feeling comes and goes in waves; everything seems fine, and then suddenly, I feel a sense of decadence. I cannot blame myself for being universally lazy because I am genuinely interested in things. I read books on related topics, attend conferences and courses, and study new technologies. Unfortunately, though, I do not feel a deep love for programming. Over time, my interest and desire to develop in this field are fading away. What is even sadder is that I cannot figure out where my true passion lies and what I would like to do in life. Perhaps this situation is due to the fact that I am "working for someone else." Maybe working for myself would bring a different experience.

I would appreciate hearing your advice. Surely, some of you have successfully changed careers, or maybe you have your own story to share. Where can I go or what can I do to avoid a radical industry change while still pursuing a new area of study?

From my observations, IT professionals tend to have a higher level of expertise, education, and breadth of knowledge compared to other industries. I may be mistaken, but does it not make sense for someone with strong mathematical skills, competent computer abilities, and a diverse set of software knowledge to explore a less competitive industry that might align better with their interests? For example, perhaps a career in finance could be worth considering.

In my personal opinion, it seems like your perspective may be a bit skewed.

1. It's not entirely accurate to claim that there are significantly more IT professionals compared to other sectors. Your exposure to the IT industry might be limited, causing an illusion of a larger number of IT specialists. In reality, there are professionals across various fields such as accounting, banking, and construction, who lead fulfilling lives.

2. The most disheartening aspect is not knowing what truly ignites your soul and what you aspire to do in life. Programming, similar to other skills like administration or accounting, is merely a means to achieve your goals—it should not be mistaken for the ultimate purpose of life.

Finding a sense of purpose in life is crucial. Once you have a clear goal, whether it's working for your uncle, programming, or pursuing a career in finance, you will approach it with enthusiasm and passion. However, without a defined goal, everything you do will eventually become mundane, leading you to question the purpose behind your actions on a daily basis.

I'm referring to a genuine goal, something truly meaningful to you. Not simply a superficial objective that you would abandon at the first sign of difficulty, but something that holds true value and significance in your life.

Attempt to find employment as a sales manager in a reputable field (excluding аlcohol, etc.). It is possible that you are lacking the level of interpersonal communication and career opportunities that managers typically possess. Alternatively, you might discover a preference for working with dоcuments and people.

It is natural for individuals to seek their purpose in life. Often, we believe one thing to be our passion, but upon attempting it, we realize that it does not bring us joy.

I have experienced this as well. I once aspired to be a lawyer, but when I pursued it, I found that I did not enjoy it and observed others excelling in the field. However, this is because I am a programmer, and those who are better suited to be lawyers find fulfillment and contribute significantly to society.

I strongly believe that everyone should pursue their own calling. Those who are drawn to leadership should dedicate themselves to mastering the intricacies of effective leadership, while those passionate about programming should strive to become adept programmers. Similarly, those inclined towards management should aim to become exceptional managers.

You're not a failure for feeling unfulfilled in your career, but you are a failure for not taking action sooner. You've had years to develop your skills and build your expertise, and now you're complaining about feeling unfulfilled? Get over yourself and focus on creating value in your current role.

Instead of whining about your situation, use your skills to make a real impact and build something that matters. Don't waste your time attending conferences or taking courses; instead, focus on building a real business or creating something that solves a real problem.
