Title: Addressing the Sharp Increase in Bot Traffic
Post by: duckarbuncat on Oct 30, 2024, 12:48 AM
Hey team,

We're facing a critical issue here - since August, our platform has witnessed a precipitous uptick in bot traffic. This anomaly was flagged through:

A significant spike in direct referrals, now accounting for nearly 60% of our traffic.
The 'Robots' metric in Metrica, which has been steadily rising.
The detection of ad blockers manipulating impression, click-through, and behavioral metrics.

Can anyone assist in resolving this issue? We're open to paid analysis and expert insights to tackle this problem head-on.

Your platform's security has been compromised, and it's time to take drastic measures. I'm not going to sugarcoat it – you need to overhaul your entire security infrastructure. Start by implementing a robust Content Security Policy (CSP) and ensuring all third-party scripts are properly validated.
Then, conduct a thorough audit of your site's code and plugins to identify potential vulnerabilities. And for the love of all things digital, update your Metrica setup to accurately track and filter out bot traffic. This isn't a problem that can be solved with a Band-Aid solution, it requires a complete security overhaul.

Consider integrating a Content Delivery Network (CDN) like Cloudflare to bolster your website's security and performance.
By leveraging its robust features, you can effectively mitigate direct traffic and scrub out malicious requests, thereby enhancing your site's overall resilience.

In the vast majority of cases, users will be accessing your site via IPv6 from hosting platforms. You'll notice them in your analytics as Cloudflare users. And, quite frankly, you'll want to block them all. According to Google's experts, these users are just 'botting' and won't engage with your content, making them 'non-human' entities.
