Title: How to monetize JS plugin (mainly jQuery)?
Post by: EmmaMckay on Mar 22, 2023, 06:52 AM
Greetings!

Around a year ago, I launched plugindetector.com with the aim of creating a catalog of high-quality and captivating jQuery plugins, although the scope was not limited to jQuery.

However, after some time, the question of monetizing the project arose, and as no satisfactory answer was found, the project came to a standstill. Currently, the project is non-profitable, receiving around 200 daily visitors.

To sustain the project, I require the assistance of three individuals:

- Myself, to complete the necessary functionalities.

- An individual who can add new plugins, for whom I am willing to provide compensation.

- A proficient copywriter with English language skills to create technical texts for the added plugins, also for whom I will provide compensation.

Of course, for the time being, I am willing to add plugins myself (until it becomes profitable), but we need to determine how I will be able to afford this.

The inclusion of text for plugins is essential for search engine optimization. Without proper text, the added plugins may not be effectively searchable.

In theory, the roles of plugin "adderer" and copywriter could be combined, but such a combination is rare among front-end developers. For example, finding a copywriter who is proficient in CSS, jQuery, and most importantly, willing to undertake such tasks, is quite uncommon.

Hence, the central question remains: how do I monetize this website?

Numerous monetization options have been considered.

Currently, the only tool in use is Google AdSense, implemented with a non-intrusive placement and an appropriate number of banners. The profit generated covers hosting and domain renewal costs, albeit slightly.

The next planned step was to join buysellads.com. However, the project has not yet reached the minimum required level of traffic for system integration (50k page views per month, whereas I currently have 15k).

Furthermore, some friends and commentators on Habra have suggested offering fully paid access to the site, either through a subscription or a one-time payment. However, I have always held skepticism towards this type of monetization.

I devised an alternative: providing free access to the site, while allowing individuals to download an archive of all demos with convenient navigation for a one-time payment. If someone does not wish to pay but still needs to download a specific plugin (e.g., if the plugin author's website is no longer available), they can save the demo within their browser, although it would be less convenient than having the downloaded archive stored on their computer.

There was also the idea of introducing a service on the site: "for xхx $$$, we will install this plugin on your site." However, this concept was met with numerous concerns and skepticism, primarily revolving around granting access to one's site to an unfamiliar individual for what some considered a relatively small job. Consequently, I swiftly set this idea aside.

Another option would be to follow the approach taken by ruseller, who sells CDs containing video tutorials or similar materials. However, this is an area where I lack expertise.

To summarize, the potential monetization options are as follows:

- AdSense
- Buy Sell Ads
- Fully paid access to the site (subscription or one-time payment)
- Service for downloading the archive of demos for a single payment
- Integration service for adding plugins to customer websites
- Sale of video tutorials on physical media

Moreover, I am also concerned about how to handle different language versions of the site.

In essence, all these questions pose significant challenges for me, given my limited experience in promoting English-language resources. Furthermore, in order to make the project profitable, substantial investments in terms of finances, time, and functional improvements will be required.

I believe it is not appropriate to generate revenue from such a project.
If the project achieves success and gains recognition, the potential financial gain for the author can be significantly higher.
Furthermore, the topic itself is quite fascinating as front-end developers and designers often require guidance amidst a plethora of plugins and constantly emerging products.
On a personal note, I have tried adapting a notebook for this purpose, but it hasn't proven to be very convenient.
If you ever require assistance with plugins, ideas, or design, please feel free to reach out.

Certainly, the question at hand is quite complex. However, I don't believe that earning substantial profits from this project would be feasible.

In my opinion, people are generally unwilling to pay for something they can obtain for free, especially considering your project primarily consists of a selection of good plugins.

If your goal is to transform the site into a business, then it is essential to invest in it—your time, effort, possibly finances, and more.

If I were in your shoes, I would prioritize thinking about effective methods to promote the project. It is intriguing and valuable in its own way, and perhaps users themselves will naturally promote and talk about it.

P.S. Currently, I am working on my own project, one that I haven't found any equivalents to yet. However, my intention is not to monetize it, and I want it to remain completely free. I don't even want to display any advertisements. It's purely a personal interest and hobby. While there will inevitably be some expenses involved, the project simply fascinates me.

In general, it often occurs that a project can gain immense traction unexpectedly from an entirely different source.

Overall, my advice would be to relax and enjoy the process. If the passion and enjoyment are lacking, it may be best to set the project aside.

One possible approach I would consider is focusing on personalizing the content, similar to how it is done on Toaster. This involves categorizing the content based on tags or headings (related to plugin themes, such as jQuery, Prototype, etc.), and allowing users to browse these collections based on release dates or script updates. Automating the process of updating and releasing new versions of scripts, especially for those using Git repositories, would greatly streamline this content. Presenting all this information beautifully on the website and complementing it with email newsletters or even a Telegram bot can enhance the user experience.

By automating certain aspects of the content, time and money can be saved. In addition, considering the ability to "verify" the author status of a script and allowing them to post their scripts can be a valuable addition. Attracting script authors should not prove too difficult since most authors want their work to be noticed, thus providing them with motivation to host their scripts on your platform.

However, the real challenge lies in monetization. One possibility is to offer the sale of scripts with a percentage given back to the authors. Additionally, extended support could be offered for a month after the sale of a script to the user who purchased it, on behalf of the author. It may also be worth exploring options for authors to promote their scripts on your site, potentially through a shareware model where a certain number of future purchases go to you as the platform owner before going to the script author.

The primary issue here is that you are currently approaching this project as a regular article-based website, which can indeed be challenging to monetize beyond AdSense. As mentioned earlier, it is crucial to invest efforts into the project to create value that users are willing to pay for on the site.

Your current strategy with AdSense is a good start, but with 200 daily visitors, the revenue will be limited. Adding buysellads.com could help, but you'll need to boost traffic significantly to meet their requirements. Offering paid access to the site could be a tough sell, especially if users see value in free access. Your idea of a downloadable archive is intriguing, but it might not be enough to drive significant revenue.

The notion of installing plugins for users raises red flags. Most people would be wary of giving access to their sites, so this could deter potential customers rather than attract them. Selling video tutorials could work, but it's a niche market and you'll need high-quality content to make it worthwhile. Combining the roles of plugin adder and copywriter might be efficient but is indeed rare, and finding someone with the right skills and willingness could be difficult.
Managing multiple language versions adds complexity and cost, which might not be justifiable until you see more traction. Before investing heavily, focus on increasing traffic and engagement first. Perhaps consider content marketing or partnerships to boost visibility. Remember, the ultimate goal is to create value that users are willing to pay for, so delve into user needs and preferences to find the right approach.

Offer a free version: Provide a basic version of the plugin for free. This will help in building a user base and gaining visibility. Premium version: Offer additional features, support, or extended functionality in a paid version. For example, custom themes, advanced settings, or integrations.

JavaScript plugins can be monetized through licensing models or subscription services. You can also offer a free basic version with premium features. You can also offer support services, accept donations, or sell on marketplaces like GitHub Sponsors or CodeCanyon.
