Title: Docker with root rights on shared webhosting
Post by: Term on Oct 16, 2022, 11:45 AM
Guys, could you inform me if there exist any Russian hosting services that allow deploying a docker container with root privileges on a virtual hosting platform? Just to clarify, I am not referring to VPS and require the specific segment of Russian hosting. The discussion pertains to shared hosting (sometimes referred to as "shared").

This is a new concept to me. However, it appears to be the same as the outdated semi-dedicated servers. Frankly, it seems illogical. What's the point of using a shared hosting service that requires you to deploy your docker? Is it because you cannot afford a VPS?

It's important to note that the cost of hosting solutions should not always be the sole determining factor. While shared hosting may seem like an affordable option at first, the limitations it imposes could result in reduced performance and security, which could ultimately cost you more money and time. Therefore, it's crucial to choose a hosting solution that offers the right balance between affordability, scalability, and feature-richness.

Why is it absurd? There are shared hosting sites where you can deploy a docker. But I don't know where you can do it with root access.

Look, let's not talk about whether it's crazy or not. And what's the point. You don't have to - well, fine. Why do you want to talk about it?

The question was clear. Are there or not such hosts in Russia? By the way, you can also look outside of Russia - for tasks not related to the processing of personal data, they might be suitable.

Not possible.
Docker is the virtualization of a specific process or application. Microservices. You can ssh connect to a container with specific permissions.
Root is about gaining access to the virtualization of the OS. That's why VPS and other virtualizations were invented.

There are docker hosts. You can't root on them at all.

Life is so short, there are so many new and interesting things in it, and you are cramming it with some bullshit🤔 everything about docker can be go-googled...
If you need some secret information, try to connect to the info-field by the method of Blavatsky...  ;)

I could not access my site from my computer. Even when I realized after talking with support that I had problems on my computer (after using VPS) and closed the ticket, getting ready to shovel the Internet in search of a solution to the problem, support still contacted me by email and helped solve the problem.

Because it's absurd. That's life.
Well, or how to put a Win11 emulator on Vedroid 4.3 :)  Well, or your favorite FreeBSD.
It is also possible, for a collection of absurdity, on the wind to attach a simulator of iPhone.

By the way, I also think that it is easier to implement everything, relying on more modern features.

You are lucky with your provider, good support is always appreciated.
That is, you have implemented this type of power on, which is discussed in this thread?
Please tell me what kind of hoster, I would like to see the terms of cooperation, other possibilities.

Term, your question sounds like "just a narrowly segmented client request, but today not all hosters can meet it. Or rather, not only all can satisfy, very few can do it", as one Kiev boxer thought. ;)
I still recommend you to look at the possibilities of VDS/VPS.
Send an application to Zomro (https://zomro.com/it-startups), they can provide 3 months for free inspection and testing of your project.
Ask for a Kazakh server, nothing will happen to it.
Do not take Ukrainian, - half of Runet is blocked there.

Within the shared hosting such as you want, there is no, and can not be, in principle.

Could you please suggest a platform where I can find a VPS? Specifically, I am a resident in Germany and I am looking for hosting services based in Russia.
(Payment is a consideration).
I plan to host pages containing photographs of simple, everyday objects. This means no videos, pоrnography, or anything similar. Only pages showcasing straightforward images of common household items.
Please note that this content is not properly licensed, although it does not involve any illegal activity. The pictures and descriptions are copied from other websites and only portray regular items.

Ideally, I would prefer something similar to Hetzner, but within the Russian hosting market. Thank you for your help.

When dealing with unlicensed content, it's important to be aware of potential legal and ethical implications. Copyright infringement can lead to severe consequences and should be avoided. Additionally, make sure to choose a hosting provider that respects copyright laws and has a policy regulating unlawful activity on their platform.

https://cp.inferno.name/cart.php?gid=47 accepts both foreign and Russian cards.

Russia is basically not a good choice for the purpose of ignoring complaints. Depends on the complaints, of course. But in general - rather no than yes.

I am always curious about a person's coding and debugging process in situations like these. In my experience, it's an iterative process. In this particular case, the backend with a profile was created without being bound to a specific IDE, allowing for connection to a designated database even before its deployment.

Although I am not a containers expert, dealing with them previously through Cloud Foundry has resulted in some inconveniences. Issues such as switching between various IDEs, local application deployment, making changes, debugging, and CORS can arise if not carefully considered beforehand.

However, your situation seems rather straightforward: inserting code here, launching there, and everything works fine.

I would be interested in reading an article detailing how a developer organizes their workflow for this type of small-scale application. Perhaps you have a set of scripts for local development that you have yet to share.

Efficient workflow management is critical for successful development. An organized approach enables developers to work more effectively and efficiently, reducing the likelihood of mistakes or missed opportunities. Additionally, using tools and techniques that integrate seamlessly into the development environment can streamline the overall process.

Running Docker with root rights on shared web hosting is generally not supported or allowed by most web hosting providers. Shared web hosting is designed to provide a secure and isolated environment for multiple users to host their websites and applications. Giving root access or running Docker containers with root privileges can pose security risks and potentially disrupt the hosting environment for other users on the same server.

In a shared hosting environment, the hosting provider typically manages the server infrastructure and ensures the security and stability of the system. They often impose restrictions on what users can do to maintain the overall stability and security of the shared environment.

If you require root access or the ability to run Docker containers with root privileges, you may need to consider other hosting options, such as a virtual private server (VPS) or a dedicated server. These hosting solutions provide more control over the server environment, allowing you to have root access and install Docker as needed. However, keep in mind that you will also be responsible for managing the server's security and maintenance in these cases.

Before proceeding with any hosting solution, it's important to review the terms of service and acceptable use policy of the hosting provider to ensure that your intended use is allowed and supported. Additionally, always prioritize security considerations and take necessary precautions to protect your applications and data.

Deploying Docker containers with root privileges on traditional shared web hosting platforms is generally not supported due to security reasons. Shared hosting environments are designed to provide a multi-tenant setup where multiple users share the same server resources. Granting root access within this environment could compromise the security and stability of the hosting platform.

In shared hosting, providers typically offer a more limited set of permissions and restrictions for users to ensure the security and stability of the server. This means that you may not have the necessary privileges to run Docker containers with root access.

To have full control over Docker containers and root privileges, it is more common to use a VPS (Virtual Private Server) or a dedicated hosting environment. These options provide greater flexibility and control over the server configuration, allowing you to deploy and manage Docker containers with root access.

If you specifically require the ability to run Docker containers with root privileges in a shared hosting environment, it would be best to contact hosting providers directly and inquire if they offer any specialized hosting plans or services that accommodate such requirements. However, be aware that this might be a niche offering and may come with additional costs or limitations.

To find hosting providers that support Docker containers with root privileges on shared hosting, it is recommended to conduct a thorough search online, read customer reviews, and visit hosting provider forums or communities. Additionally, you can directly reach out to hosting companies and inquire about their hosting plans and whether they provide options for deploying Docker containers with root access on shared hosting platforms.

Keep in mind that even if a hosting provider supports running Docker containers with root privileges, it is important to consider the security implications and potential impact on the stability of the hosting environment. Running containers with root access can increase the risk of security breaches and impact the performance of other websites hosted on the same server.

Consider discussing your requirements with hosting providers and evaluating other hosting options like VPS or dedicated servers, which are generally more suitable for running Docker containers with root access due to their increased flexibility and control over the server environment.
