Title: About hosting providers
Post by: ilhm on Jul 08, 2022, 04:17 AM
Hi there. When selecting a hosting provider, what factors do you consider? Do you focus on the price, maximum load capacity, disk space, or other aspects?

Generally speaking, price is not a major concern during the initial stages of development and load capacity may not be as important. However, it's important to decide whether to stick with the same hosting provider and upgrade to a more cost-effective plan or to switch providers altogether. Dedicated servers are also an option.

When selecting a hosting provider, there are various factors to consider, including the reputation of the service provider, demand for queries in search engines compared to data from internet marketing, geography (USA being preferable), availability of 24/7 English support, pricing, ease of server operation (ideally, reliable and affordable virtual hosting with the ability to switch to a VPS in the future), free additional services such as website transfer, backups, IP, backup and automatic restoration from backup options, payment methods, number of simultaneous running processes, DDoS protection, and uptime.

When choosing a new hosting, first of all, I pay attention to the technical characteristics. Is it possible to work with Wordpress and other popular engines, what disk space can be obtained at a certain rate, is there round-the-clock support, is there a fresh version of PHP. It is also good if it is possible to order a virtual or cloud server to host large services.

Choosing the server where your project will be located can be difficult, especially if you are new to site building. Choosing the wrong type or hosting plan can be an expensive mistake — it makes no sense to spend a lot of money on functions that you don't need, but excessive savings can lead to the loss of some site visitors due to slow operation or low uptime.

When creating plans for web hosting, the hosting company creates 2 to 5 packages, which are most often limited to 500 Gb of free space. This distribution allows the hosting provider to determine the number of users that will be assigned to each machine (server). This does not mean that they cannot provide you with 1, 5 or 10 TB, however, creating a unique offer turns web hosting into renting a dedicated server.
I think you can easily find offers from hosting to rent dedicated up to 10Tb.

Reliability and Uptime: One of the most important considerations when choosing a web hosting provider. Examine the company's history of uptime in the past to understand its reliability.

Customer Support: Another important factor is customer support 24/7.

For me, the main thing is the availability of the server 24 hours 7 days a week. Technical support first of all. The presence of different servers in different countries and the quick transfer of the site to another server (dos attacks, etc.) .. It all depends on the project that you want to host.

When choosing a hosting provider for your site, one of the key decisions you'll need to make is whether to go with a Windows or Linux operating system. The choice you make will depend on the requirements of your CMS and the technologies used. If your site requires ASP, ASP.NET and MS SQL database support, you'll need to choose Windows hosting. However, if your site can run on both platforms, it's usually best to choose Linux hosting.

There are several advantages to hosting on the Linux platform. Firstly, the price is usually cheaper than Windows hosting. Secondly, Linux is generally considered more stable and secure. Additionally, Linux hosting is supported by a large number of CMS and other applications.

Another important factor to consider when choosing a hosting provider is the PHP configuration and required modules. PHP is the most common scripting language used by many CMS and web applications. When selecting a hosting provider, it's important to take into account the PHP version and memory limit for executing a PHP script. Check that the version of PHP used by your CMS is supported and that the memory limit is sufficient. You should also consider the available PHP modules, such as Curl, iconv, ionCube, xsl, gd, imagick, Loader, Zend Optimizer, and others.

Databases are also an important consideration when choosing a hosting provider. Most CMS support MySQL databases, but PostgreSQL and MS SQL databases are also frequently used. Ensure that the hosting provider supports the type of database used by your CMS.

Finally, security is an essential aspect of any hosting provider. Pay attention to whether the provider keeps their server software up-to-date and properly configured. High-quality hosting providers will ensure regular software updates and robust security measures.

There are several nuanced factors that I consider when selecting a hosting provider. First and foremost, the specific technical requirements of the website play a crucial role in the decision-making process. This includes assessing the compatibility of the hosting provider with the technologies and frameworks used in the website's architecture. For instance, if the website is built on a specific CMS (Content Management System) or uses certain programming languages, the hosting provider must support these technologies effectively.

Additionally, the scalability and flexibility of the hosting solution are vital considerations. A hosting provider that offers scalable resources such as CPU, RAM, and storage can accommodate the website's growth over time. This is particularly important for websites that anticipate a significant increase in traffic or content volume in the future.

Security features also weigh heavily in the decision. A hosting provider that offers robust security measures, such as SSL certificates, DDoS protection, and regular backups, is essential for safeguarding the website and its data from potential threats.

The geographical location of the hosting server is another factor to take into account. If the target audience of the website is primarily located in a specific region, opting for a hosting provider with server locations in close proximity to that audience can result in better loading speeds and overall performance.

Furthermore, the hosting provider's reputation and track record for customer service and technical support are crucial. Access to responsive and knowledgeable support can make a significant difference in swiftly resolving any technical issues that may arise, minimizing downtime and ensuring a positive user experience.

Along with you must consider factors like uptime, security features, reputation of web hosting provider, control panel and operating system etc.

Don't fall for those dirt-cheap plans - they're bait to lock you into a laggy, oversold server that can't handle a basic WordPress site without choking. Uptime claims are often straight-up BS, 99.9% means nothing if their hardware is ancient and their datacenter is a glorified shed.

Support? Good luck getting a human who isn't reading off a script while your site's down. I grill providers on their infrastructure - redundant setups, SSDs, and load balancing - or it's a hard pass. Scalability and backups better not be an upsell scam either.
